Hello, please help me understand PBNs. I learned about them but honestly still can't fully grasp them. I am actually more confused after trial and errors.
I am going through the PBNs I have now and deciding which ones to let go so I checked on Ahrefs, the PBNs DA, the amount of domains linked to it, and the amount of backlinks it has. Some DA are high while the # backlinks are low and vise versa.
Some of the DAs are so low, like 0.2 or 0.8. One has 0.2 DA, 21 domains linked and 143 backlinks. Another has 1.4 DA, 51 domains linked, and 513 back links. I heard that the more domains that are linked to the PBN, the better.
Help?

I still don’t get it why people still rely on MOZ metrics.

Don't rely on metrics, especially Moz metrics, you can use ahrefs to filter domains,
Basically most of the low DR domains will have low authority & not a good link profile, while high DR domains can be both good decent domains & spam ones,
So, use the service (or any tool that integrate the API) to filter & get the domains with relatively high DR & you'll have to check them manually from there,

A good domain is defined by a clean history/suage in the first place and the link profile from there,
You should aim for domains with contextual links from authority websites placed in a good pages, not a profile, comment or similar links

Analyze the backlinks especially for spam and unwanted domains

Thanks for your feedback. I have already done this, and they don't have any strange websites that are linked to them. Any other advice?

When looking at PBNs, aim for quality rather than just numbers. Pick ones with higher Domain Authority (DA) and relevant backlinks to avoid trouble and get better results.

Google has released a statement regarding expired domains.

Unless your PBN is purely private and you're not selling out to link builders and you have found ways to address the issues that Google raised about expired domains, you shouldn't even do it.

You will spend a lot of money and the expired domain market can be quite expensive only to be rewarded with a big fat zero because Google cracked down.

I'm not saying don't do it.

I'm saying don't do it in a lazy way.

A lot of the people who got deindexed or were clobbered by Google basically just used AI content with no human editorial input.

They just didn't care.

They just autopublished that stuff, and they played the online publishing game on a purely volume level.

Now I'm not saying you won't be able to get away with it.

Like with any nuclear catastrophe, there are always roaches that survive, but it's only a matter of time.

If I were you, use such tools as expired domains the right way.

Otherwise, the word is out.

Google is gunning for sloppy use of this otherwise valuable linkbuilding strategy.

Go through the PBN's and disregard DA altogether or use it as a starting point but focus more on traffic and backlink profile. Are the backlinks relevant to the website niche? Are the backlink reputable? using PBN's can be a very risky game as they may get flagged by Google if they are not done correctly and if you are attached to them, you will suffer. If the domain has a high DA and a lot of Google redirect backlinks, I would stay clear of it as the DA is probably falsly inflated due to Moz's incompetency to ignoring these backlinks.

Metrics don't matter much. As long as the domain is relevant to your niche, and has a clean backlink profile & history, it will work well.

Make Sure Your Links Relevant To Your Niche And Try To Put Good Quality Content. It's Good For Domain Authority.

Link relevancy is most important. If you are buying from a seller, make sure he has very diverse portfolio to choose from. Then only he can provide relevant links.

High DA with low backlinks might indicate quality links, while low DA with high backlinks could mean spammy or low-quality links. But look beyond DA

I had a case where a low DA PBN with high-quality, niche-relevant backlinks performed better than a higher DA one with spammy links.
