Strategy for sms verification for social media platforms

I know there are online virtual number services in which you can verify your phone number for social media accounts like instagram twitter etc.
But if i really want to keep an account and not risk losing it i feel a permanent number i own is better option.
For this can i just buy a cheap af phone and then buy pay as you go sim cards and switch them about in the phone, for example account 1 needs to be verified and has had a a code sent to its phone number so i put account 1s sim card in the cheap af phone to receive the code .
Also hopefully it is a code and not a link i need to follow and log into account as that complicates things i will try to find out.
Is this an ok setup?

Yes, this is absolutely fine. You could place the mobile phone with any of your relative and also install remote access software like TeamViewer with "Unattended Access." So any time you want to see what sms or the mobile received, you could just connect to that mobile and see for yourself. This technique can work for links as well.

With the remote access software and stuff, is there a benefit or reason i would want to store the phone at a relatives or something instead of keeping in my home?
