A whitehat 7 year old site of mine just tanked, no spam links EVER, page one on several keywords, e-commerce site, but last few weeks I have started to check rankings for long tails.

Just sayin...

In my opinion it's just a coincidence. Many whitehat sites have been slapped by google penguin update last week. To be on the safe site always use proxies to conduct mass operations on google.
I hope your site will be up again soon.

Ahrefs and rank tracker. Just want to clarify; total unique content, natural organic links, no spam EVER, no link building EVER.

Not speculating here, only other factor is shared hosting, otherwise perfect site in Googles eyes.

I use rank tracker......you just got penalized from using it to check your rankings??

If you were....how were u informed?

This is a coincidence, I think G is not going to bother to ban you for querying your serps. In the old days they hated it but now badwidth is around so much more.

Yes, there is so much IP sharing, they will not bother or take the chance to ban someone for something like this IMO.

It might be coincidence but I have been looking at buying a site on Flippa and have been checking it's rankings using market samurai daily for the last week. The site got hit by penguin but has also been slowly dropping further and further each day. I wonder whether that has anything to do with me constantly checking the rankings.

Course I do that too, all the time, not long ago negative SEO didn't work, now it does, things change and Im trying to keep up with them, still I won't be checking any rankings for this site, only competitors , and check my traffic through analytics.
And of course it can all just be a glitch in the Matrix....
