Based on a recommendation here, I'm giving these guys a test and trying the Backconnect rotating proxies for whois scraping with scrapebox.

They offer a "test month" of 10 threads for a good price, and they let you choose whether to rotate IPs on every request, every 3 minutes, or 15 minutes. I'm running 7 threads for the test, and not trying more because I'm already running into bans. I've tried both USA and Wordwide options, no difference in results.

Questions:
1) About 20 - 40% of the scrape requests return with a banned/blocked IP message. Is this normal, or is something unusual going on? They claim to be using 70,000 IPs, so how can I be getting blocks with just 7 threads?

2) Can I continue with the 10 thread plan? The first non-test plan is $40 for 40 threads, but if it is maxxed out at 7 threads then having (and paying for) 40 is rather pointless. What's odd is that the purchase items says "test/trial month only", but it automatically sets up a recurring charge in PayPal.

70,000 proxies shared amongst how many thousands of other customers of theirs?

How many customers could they realistically have on this plan? 100? 1000? Most people I know don't even know what a proxy is.

Even if it was just a hundred, all it takes to ban an entire range is 1 client.

That's the point of backconnect rotating IPs, they are all from different ranges.

.....and every client would be pulling the same ip's from those same ranges.

I'm from Storm Proxies.
At first - not all clients are using proxies for the same purpose.
On that plan are not more then 500 clients and not all are accessing the same site.
Some are using proxies for tickets, some for games, some for regular surfing, some for scrapping specific sites, some for google..etc...
I'm sure there are not more then 10 of you who use Storm Proxies for whois scrapping.

As someone who is long time in different internet businesses - my advice is - try different proxies setups, different proxy companies, but also different ways to scape whois.
I know people who scrape whois on big scales even without proxies - using their own pyton scrappers. They have found what is perfect header and timeout for scrapping.
Also, there are tons of sites online without captcha protection that offers whois info and with simple scrapper you can even scape data from them.

With our proxies you can be happy long time. I don't think you can find cheaper and better solution in proxy way,
but with some investment you can build custom scrapper and save money for proxies on long way.

It just depends is what you are doing at the moment something for long term,
or short term money making method,
or just an experiment.

To summarize:

As thread is about Storm Proxies - you can't find for that money better proxy solution.
From business side - you can do it easier if you plan to do it long term.

Deki -

Thank you for the reply! I appreciate the advice.

I've been running Scrapebox using your service, and while I'm very happy with the service overall, it still appears that the "3 minute" gateway uses IPs that are sometimes already banned by the WHOIS server, or become banned after 1 or 2 minutes. The "main" gateway has fewer banned results, but runs much much slower. The 15 minute gateway is fastest, but is banned about 45% of the time when running 1 thread.

Questions:
1) Why are there 2 IPs given as the gateway for 3 Min and 15 min sessions? Should we rotate using those gateways? The 1st gateway's IPs seem to be all banned when I tested them.
2) The 10 Thread plan says "for testing service only", but sets up automatic recurring payments. Will I be able to renew this plan next month?

Again, thank you!

I don't want to make from this thread Storm Proxies support thread - so please contact our support team via our site and they will answer on any technical question to you.
Anyway here are answers on your questions:

1) rotate randomly gateways if you have more then one.
2) you can use 10 threads pack as long as you want. We call is "for testing service only" because other plans have stronger power.

years ago the ban rate of proxies was quite low when fewer people scraped
but over the years its gotten harder , the best way to lower ban rate is less threads
per minute the slower your thread rate the lower the ban rate, but, if multiple people
are using the same proxies at same time you do, no matter how careful u are
if others are hammering the proxies at 500 threads per min, nothing u can do
but thats where large pool comes into play, u just have to except that scraping today
is a little harder than it was say 5 yrs ago

Use microleaves for scraping mate, much much better imo.

I like the Storm Proxies rotator but I also need some regular shared proxies, so I signed up for a Microleaves shared proxy package, and the order was processed quickly, but the proxies did not work, getting an error on every call.

I opened a support ticket, and got a response this response from Microleaves:
----
Tech Support: I've went ahead and issued you full refund. Unfortunately we don't have proxies for your needs.
----
WTF?!! There is nothing in their documentation saying it can't be used for whois scraping.

Mirroleaves support just added another reply:
---
We no longer allow our proxies to be used in Scrapebox since it's a spam tool.

Ah, sorry to hear that.

That is reality of any business - you need to test many services/setups/methods until you find what is working.
It will require some time and money but at some point you will find perfect combo.

Don't give up.
