Wordfence works great. It even offers some extra services. If you want it for only blocking (bot) registrations, it will work fine. Even in the free version! You can get email notifcations as well.

It was childish and I shouldn't have done it but unfortunately you are one of those infuriating guys that just occasionally annoy me with your rudeness and your attitude.

Use Google Captcha, I think this will help.
Google Latest Captcha is More Complex to Solve, I think Bot can't do it.

The one with multiple images and "select all that are a something" are probably impossible to break without some serious AI power.
