Obviously the "Ice Bucket" challenge has gone viral and I believe the initiative of the challenge comes with good intent. I also commend all of those who have been willing to help, but it seems that only a few cents of every dollar has actually gone towards its intended purpose.


I personally believe there should be some sort of enforcement that makes non-profits invest, at least a set percentage of, its donated funds to its intended purpose.


Curious to see some of your inputs.

Anybody investing in charities should check out the distribution of the funds they raise, whether a 'viral' or slick marketing element is involved with them or not. Some are just a step above scams, or fronts providing cover for a largely different purpose than they advertise.
 
This is one of the reasons why I don't donate actual money to charity.

But the messed up thing is, as soon as you start telling people about this type of thing, they switch off because they've all been brainwashed to the point that they feel they need to donate in-order to feel "good" about themselves and if they don't donate, they are heartless scumbags.

It's the media and "sheep mentality" that if you don't personally follow, you're a weirdo, tin foil hat conspiracy theorist.

If this is true then I see no reason why there should be a law to make sure donations like this are used properly. That said, humans and greed...best friends since 3,000,000 BC!

I agree that it's important to check before committing, especially if it's a larger amount. At the end of the day, the ones that get the the shit end of the stick are those actually in need of the donations. In this case, those diagnosed with ALS.
 
Yeah this is sad but true. Also saw a post on another forum stating that less that 30 percent was going towards the research itself.

In a business sense, you're right. It's called ROI distribution. But call it what you'd like, I'm personally not fond of making money off of selling false hopes to those diagnosed with medical conditions.
 
I'm not against anyone but people tends to go with the wind without thinking about the facts where there Donations in the name of charity is used.
As of 2012, ALSA has directed only 7.71% of its budget to Research. And not only that, 63.63% of their budget for the fiscal year was dedicated to "Other Program Activities"
Total expanses has been removed from the 2014 report

You don't see a reason as to why a company should be held accountable to doing what they say they will?
 
According to me, raising funds would be more easier for ppl like Mark Zukerburgh or Bill Gates than taking Ice Bucket Challenge.
 
This type of thing always disgusts me... they would have to pay more than 7% if they were paying taxes.. basically they are thieves and are being cheered by the masses.
 
I wouldn't imagine seeing "Strippers and Beer" on a financial statement. I guess "Other Program Activities" will have to do. lol
