I used seo spyglass to find 1,000 backlinks for the #1 site for my keyword.
When I open Some of the backlinks that the program shows though, i cant find the #1 site anywhere but if i go to page source and search for it then it shows up in the search. so weird. so how am i supposed to know exactly where they left their backlinks so that i can leave my own?

I don't quite understand what you mean =x
maybe just use open site explorer or yahoo site explorer instead and scout competitors backlinks?

i dont see where the competitor left their backlinks on the site.
but i know they did somewhere because i click on view-->page source--> edit---> find--> competitor
and i see they are there somewhere

there are some cases where the link is hidden with a "notshow" attribute.It exists but you cant see it if you dont see the source.

Its usual for developers of free plugins to do that or for web developers.

i think the code is :
<div style="display: none;">

Check with what anchor text they are linking in the source code. Then search that anchor text on the webpage.

Right think of it like this

Your looking at Yahoo CACHE for backlinks, you then go to the page to look for your link - Its not there right??

Thats because your links most likely was there when the site was cached but when you go to the site its live and without your link!!

he might have dropped a backlink without anchor text.in that case,see the surrounding text and that will tell you where he dropped the link.

Take a look at where exactly the link is in the code, whether it is a comment, an ad, or header/footer. You can also search by the anchor text as suggested above - the anchor text will be visible on the page.

Or the link can be a hidden one, in that case you might need to contact the webmaster of the site and ask about a way of getting a link form his site. Hidden links are very likely to be devalued though...
