Maybe ;) Facebook has helped a lot to create a personal brand for many individuals and for businesses.
 
I think it goes without saying you are going to have a difficult time creating a social networking site that rivals Facebook.

That being said if you can add something dramatic to the user expierence that is unique, there is always the possibility.

It's very tough time to build a great social network, Facebook is the largest social network site that can be accesed easily from anywhere on the internet, while your social network needs to be accessed only from PC or laptop, etc.

You may try.. people said the same to Google when they asked for financing their business.
 
Last year i thought about creating some social network sites using phpfox. But targetted at football fans. So one social site for every big team in England and Europe Teams like arsenal manchester united, real madrid, bayern munich etc.

I didn't act on the idea but im pretty sure i would have had some success with it.
 
how we can compete the giants. Its nearly impossible to start a Successful Social Media Site when Giants Like Facebook and Twitter ruling the social media.
 
Facebook is the very popular and largest social network so you may create the social network is very innovative and creative than facebook.
It has so much of interesting package and also it will give the good business too.
 
the idea is to not compete with the BIG Social Sites, but to merely go around them and leverage their sites for yours and start niche social sites...

but I dont have alot of time to market it because I have 3 business already now selling services to business in the US.
but this is a fitness and thrill seeker niche social site...

and yes I am selling it if anyone wants it to start their own niche social site...
 
principle: Time is money, you can buy an hour of your time and money. You can bring in 1 million hits with goggle adsense. it need big money, it will be undertaken facebook. Give more value than just facebook. Now it is very much popular social networks. Tublr, fuccbook, and others. User survive one year in your website it is good. Regular facebook user lasted only 5 years in facebook. And business user last nearly 10 years
 
You really need to know what your are doing to start such project. OP TBH, by posting this question here I doubt you are ready to develop successful social network.
 
There's a lot of research to be done if you want to rival with fb. You might not outpace it... but if you find something that fb's lacking and implement that in your site, and promote it heavily, you might have a chance to get your piece of pie.
 
if youfind something that fb doesn't have and it gets really popular then wouldn't facebook just take over a do it themselves. Wouldn't a niche forum be better added to existing site and use facebook to promote and share forum posts
 
Put a unique "twist" to it and maybe you will have something.

Not easy to start a social networking site
unless your pocket and bank account are flooding with money
and it's almost impossible to compete giant like facebook
