There has been a niche I wanted to get into and write content for/become an authority site for. I have wanted to do this for a while. I was previously even considering writing a book on this topic.
The issue is the niche is unbelievably saturated. Most relevant key words are in the 70s although some articles can obviously target some lower competition stuff but most relevant keywords are high 30s to high 40s in moz - low competition in this niche is still around 35). There are well resourced competition, big authority sites (although with a wider focus than my niche) and even some government websites that rank. However, their content is not that good from a user perspective. In some cases it's downright misleading.
There is one huge general authority site that is completely dominating (91 domain authority and many millions of high quality backlinks) but that site has this niche has only one of its topics. It's a more general authority site that covers 100 or so topics and my niche is just one of those topics.
The highest ranking more focused authority site that targets my niche has 48 domain authority, 5394 backlinks with 82% d0follow and 902 referring domains.
I have some original content/original ideas in this niche that truly answers questions/solves problems for people. I was thinking of just going ahead and doing it anyway and hope great content will win out over mediocre content in the long run. I am not sure though if I am going to be facing a losing battle being just me trying to pump out content in a niche covered by a huge authority site. While it's something I am interested in, I actually also want to get somewhere with it.
