Hello SEO Pros,

I've recently taken over an e-commerce site specializing in batteries, and I'm at a bit of a crossroads. The site currently attracts about 7,000 visitors monthly, but it has been somewhat neglected. The backend is a mess. The previous owner didn't update the site or its plugins regularly.

As I embark on this journey, I'm cautious about making sweeping changes that might disrupt the existing traffic flow. My main questions are:
  1. How would you approach the task of updating and improving a site like this, without risking the loss of current traffic?
  2. What are the key SEO strategies you would implement first for a niche site in the battery industry?
  3. Are there any specific considerations or challenges you foresee in maintaining or enhancing the site's SEO, given its current state?
  4. How important is content updating in this scenario, and what type of content should I prioritize?
  5. Any suggestions for quick wins in SEO that can help boost the site's performance without extensive overhaul?
  6. Should we just build a new site with existing URLS?
I'm eager to hear your thoughts and strategies on how to navigate this situation effectively.

Thank you!

  • Retain the URL structure if you can, unless it’s terrible then it might be worth changing it. I would always try to retain the current structure, it’s cleaner.
  • Carry out a content audit ie remove pages with no traffic, light blog pages, product tags, categories, pages that are not being used. You may need a professional to help you with this. Ecom sites create junk pages over time.
  • Check the basic on page content, ensure each product has good info, category page text, etc look at basic on page seo.
You should deffo start with a content audit.

Congratulations on taking charge of the e-commerce site! It's a commendable move, and I understand the delicate balance you're aiming for. Here's a seasoned perspective:

1. Prioritize Backend Cleanup: Start with a meticulous audit of the backend. Gradual improvements can be made without disrupting the current traffic flow. Fix critical issues first, ensuring a seamless user experience.

2. Strategic SEO Implementation: Focus on long-tail keywords specific to battery types and usage. Optimize product pages with relevant meta tags, descriptions, and high-quality images. Leverage schema markup for better visibility in search results.

3. Addressing SEO Challenges: Given the neglected state, initial challenges may include broken links and outdated content. Regularly monitor and fix these issues, and consider a comprehensive backlink audit to maintain a healthy SEO profile.

4. Content Updating Significance: Content is king. Prioritize updating product descriptions, ensuring they're informative and engaging. Incorporate blog posts addressing common battery-related queries. Fresh and relevant content enhances both user experience and SEO.

5. Quick Wins in SEO: Implementing 301 redirects for broken links, optimizing site speed, and leveraging user-generated content can provide quick wins. Additionally, explore local SEO strategies to target regional markets effectively.

6. Evaluate Existing URLs: Assess the value of existing URLs. If they have strong domain authority and backlinks, consider improving the current site. However, if a fresh start is necessary, implement proper redirects to retain SEO benefits.

Navigating this transition requires a strategic approach. Remember, gradual improvements are often more sustainable than rapid overhauls. Best of luck with the rejuvenation of the e-commerce site!
