So just like everyone else in the world i wanted to have a website like as big as facebook.. so i thought why not beat them at their own game...

I worked with one of my freelancers in developing a site like facebook but with options. I also took inputs from all my friends who don't use facebook and why they don't use it. basically after a few months of research i came up with a plan of a first "starter" version.

Now that i basically have my website and basic features. I have started blogging about the website. posting blogs on blogger, wordpress, and squidoo. Also making comments on blogs i scraped from scrapbox.

So my question basically is how do sites like facebook get their traffic? or really how can i get the word out there.. Could any one send some more idea's my way besides what i have done so far.

Thanks

Atm the biggest platform for you to get traffic is facebook, dont underestamate them

well here is the cold hard truth it's not going to beat facebook even if it's 100X better people just arent going to leave facebook had large investors when it started and back then in 06 it was way easier to get into social media so my advice is don't waste your time or if you want to try go ahead but it's not going to beat them trust me i've tried it before and wasted and lost allot

Just keep promoting through blogs or whatever. Just keep promoting, and promoting, you will get members who will tell their friends, and then their friends, and the whole thing will spider web and reach many people. It will take some work but with dedication it can be done, maybe not as big as Facebook, but still even 10k members is good. If you need help with the site or advertising let me know, i'd be interested in this.

What is your USP compared to Facebook? What makes you better than facebook that will attract users to your site & not to other social networking sites?

well u can try, but u must be much better then fb

must have something different to offer

if u can be sucess only gods know that

and guys all projects start from 0, so its possible to create a new project and works fine and have sucess

I would suggest getting your immediate friends and family to start with your site. Not only will be be using it, but you'll get feedback and be able to fix and bugs that will be sure to appear. Secondly, you need to find a way to integrate it with Facebook. So that when a friend from facebook makes a page on your site it will announce it on his facebook page, too. Seriously the only way you'll do better than facebook is by word of mouth.

What everyone else said, A) if you are going for a general audience, what features sets you apart from FB OR B) you can go niche based and just get market share from a targeted audience.....

you have to do better than facebook, you have to offer something that is unique, where people will engage and the most important, will reccomend
what are you looking for is social traffic, you can try with websites like socibuzz or make some campaigns with media buying, adwords, facebook ads
do you have something to invest?

Facebook is not too easy to beat unless you have some unique twist to the whole thing, even then you'll mostly likely be just able to co-exist with them with you being the smaller business.

My advice is do not bother trying to compete against a monopoly.

Good job on thinking big op but imo if i was in your shoes id probably go for like a dating site...but oh well i wish u all the best in your journey...plus dont let any1 tell u oh this wont work..that wont work...just do it...if u fail youl get experince to make better choices and decisions later...:)

You're an ant, looking at a rubber tree. Good luck, you're gonna need it.

This is how you do those things:
1) Get money( find investors, get a loan, try kickstarter)
2) Do some heavy offline promotion in a highly populated area (e.g. New York, Central Park =) ). People will only join a social network if there is someone they know already using it. Twitter marketed their network with users being able to follow famous movie stars etc. Facebook tries to get you in by having all your friends there, etc. If you market it in a specific location there is a large possibility that more users that know each other will notice it and use it to communicate. Posting comments on blogs is not for this kind of thing.
3) PROFIT

Basically you need a lot of money to get a lot of exposure

Something to think about.. offer something different than Facebook. Facebook basically pushed MySpace and co away and
attained a monopoly position (sort of). Do note it's a long shot bro.. If you are doing this by yourself than please note you
will have some sleepless nights.. BUT AGAIN.. OFFER SOMETHING DIFFERENT

Gud luck LOL
But u must invest lots of money
As everybody said ,Its IMP to hav different feature and interesting stuffff than Facebook
:) GUd luck
