Ok, iv been stressed over the last few weeks because im completely stuck and I need your guys help.

I have built a successful website design company in the past, which did pretty well. But its was stressful, clients were demanding, income wasn't consistent, etc.

1 year later and I now want to start an SEO company. I would be starting from fresh, new domain, website, etc. I thought it might be a good idea to start off as a website design company, get valuable links from large sites in exchange for free work (doing trivial tasks). Then when I have built up the site's authority and have a strong link profile switch to become a SEO company. I assume it would be extremely hard to get clients when your site is completely new as an SEO agency. So this seems like a good strategy.

I think this would work, but on the flip side, once I make the decision to become an SEO company, id have to re-brand the site all around. SEO, links, content, everything. Just thinking about it gives me a headache.

What do you think I should do? Start fresh as an SEO company, with low authority and no links? Or start as a website design company and work my way up to becoming a SEO company?

All advice is strongly appreciated.

linkedin, throw on a suite, build a nice site and start spending lots of time on linkedin

Exactly what @asap1 said.
You can work on your own SEO with time, and on the meantime adquire clients trough direct contact. Reach out to people who you think you can help with their SEO and online presence either online and offline (don't ignore the offline companies and small business who know nothing about SEO or how to rank their own website). Just make an email template, or a sales pitch and call them!

You can get clients without ranking for keywords.

Yeah, web design. Add SEO as a premium service.

Would it be a bad idea to start as a website design company then switch to a website design business?

Why not both? Most seo company's do Web design as well anyway and you could sell seo to people you do Web design for

If you can able to fulfill your client's requirements in both Web design and SEO then you can sure to start it. Also, you can bring your client even if you haven't a strong website. You can get the clients by making the direct contact with them and you can build your website wisely. All the best.

Why not upsell SEO to your existing clients?
+1

SEO is a great upsell along with content marketing and social media. Offer them a certain number of blog posts every month along with management of all their social pages. People make crazy money doing this. You already have leads from your web design business, design a plan and pick up the phone, reach out to your existing clients and laugh all the way to the bank!

Have you considered a hybrid approach?

Ultimately any client you get does not actually want seo. They actually want fresh, targeted, leads!
They just think they need a website with seo to get it.

They don't. So have you considered just getting and selling them fresh targeted leads? As that is a lot quicker to hit the ground running with.

If you don't know how to do that PM me. But you will need 15 posts on here to do that. BHW works on give and take.
You will need to give first before you can take.

90% of SEO companies are crap, you will not be more bad than them. Your own backlink profile does not matter.

success usually come from choosing something your passionate bout to get benefit from it in the long run i mean if your good in seo or knows how to outsource it you will find success there.

Dude, you think an SEO Agency is going to be LESS stressful than a WEB DESIGN Agency?

You mentioned stress and headaches a lot though your post. I suggest you give up lol

And the biggest question isssss do you actually know SEO? If not then please stick to web design lol you will end up having more headache and stress.

I have worked for both a SEO and website design for a significant amount of time. SEO is much easier and is a much more consistent source of income. Just harder to get clients

You could say it's more fun or more exciting to work on for you. SEO is definitely not easier for everyone...just sayin'.

So you just switched from web design to SEO because you thought it would be easier? And your plan is to do "trivial tasks" (?) for authority sites so that they give you a link in return? Then once you have a bunch of links from your trivial tasks, you become a SEO agency and WHAM you start getting traffic and clients start contacting you and you are able to close them and you magically learn how to do SEO for the clients instead of just taking their money and scamming them? Am I missing something here? If that sounded accurate then no sh*t you are stuck, you don't know how to do SEO, let alone get people to pay you for it...
