Hey OP,
I'm building an authority site myself. Same method of monetization. I'm only doing 10$ a day from 250-300 visitors a day. My post are 100% unique and VERY WELL researched. I post content for the user, not for google.
How do you post your aff link? I'm curious on this one. I'm personnally posting like 2-3 links in my articles when its needed, but I dont overpush it. For example, i'm not writting crap such as : get 50% off here, this is the best deal, ect.
Are you using buy now buttons ? i'm trying to optimise my site more. I get like 70 clicks per day and conv rate is like 2% from those 70.

2% is really low. There must be something wrong, for amazon i normally get a 12-20% click through conversion.
What i do is basically talk about the product and then say there are many of them for sale online, but we highly recommend this one. Then put an image of the product and immediately below that put an amazon buy now button.
Also make say why this is the product you recommend Try to find advantages of that product that others don't have. This will make them buy it hopefully .

Yeh i was really surprised too. I got a couple of PR 6 contextual links and it flew to pr3 not sure why or how it got updated so fast

Yeah, thing is that i'm selling product that are 1000$ or more. I guess it affects the Conversion rate.
To answer my question, how do you present your aff link? Buttons?

Yes I use a buy now button with amazon colours, people recognize that orange colour worldwide which is why the click through is so high.
I use that very often and its working great for me so far. I also sometimes have an anchor link somewhere in my article like "for the cheapest price click here"

Things I've learned with my authority sites:
Backup your site regularly: This seems obvious, but it's easy to forget. You don't want something to happen to your site and not have a backup. In my early web dev days, I accidentally deleted my entire site from my hosting account. Really stupid, but I had a backup..thank god.
Use G Webmaster Tools: Signing up for G Webmaster Tools can actually be really helpful. My site was penalized by Panda, and the only way I was able to figure that out is that I could see all of the pages on my site that Google considered "duplicate". I removed those pages and shot right back to the top of the SERPs.
Utilize your analytics: Check your stats for keywords that are bringing in traffic. You might see keywords that you never noticed before. It's amazing how many an authority site can rank for. Some of them are really high traffic and you can focus on doing a bit more optimization for those high traffic, low comp keywords.
