1. Create lots of fake accounts you can easily to do this in Admin Panel if you used vbulletin.
2. Post lots of contents make your site looks like an established forum. Copy from another forum and related websites. Just copy paste it doesn't matter to google it will still rank your content. People on most forums normally do this.
3. Add addons to make the links cannot seen by guest or unregistered users.
4. Create social accounts like, facebook page, twitter, digg. And tweet/digg/share it everytime you post contents on your forum. It will make google index yournew posts in no time and give you some rankings. There is a script/tool to do this just searched on google. I used a custom bot now.
5. Blast some cheap ppc/ppv traffic related to your niche
6. Do some seo yourself or use the linkpushing.net to rank your keywords.
7.Security is critical in your forum. Your hard work will gone in a second if you failed to this. Always read and have an update about your forum and mods Vulnerabilities. Use Strong passwords 30 to 50 character (symbols+upper+lower+numbers combination). Even if the attacker gets your admin password hash usually by sql injection, It would take them months or years to decrypt it.

Thanks for the advice and useful info. I have thought about starting a few forums for specific niches, but it just seemed to time consuming.
