Started with a viral news site, any tips?

Hi guys,

I got inspired by others here and just thought: let's do it. So I started a viral news site like ViralNova, Buzzfeed etc.

It's in Dutch, and the traffic is already doing good (around 900-1K uniques a day) my site is only 3 days online.

For promotion I use Twitter and Facebook. Also FB ads (but not doin really good with it).

Maybe you guys got any tips to get more traffic. And oh yeah, the bounce rate is pretty high, what to do about it?

You must be doing something right if you got that traffic already.

For bounce, maybe better linking to other relevant items ?

If if you want to do black hat then there are plugins that stop people from using back button and so on which will help lower bounce rate.
 
I use a bit of code in the header for that. Fucking brill for sending traffic to relevant surveys n shit.

Doesnt help lower bounce rate though lol

If you wanna send back up traffic elsewhere or back to your site use this code in appearance > editor > theme header.

Maybe just to stop the return to google so they don't see the bounce.

There are also some plugins sold here I believe that do reduce bounce rate, not sure how they work.

Same principal, slightly different implementation.

I think there are other more recent plugins as well that do the same thing.

Obviously this is mostly for the benefit of fooling Google. If you want to really get your visitors to engage more then you would need smarter tactics like optimising the user experience, inter-linking between pages etc.

The most important thing is revenue because hosting can be expensive when you get a lot of traffic. If you're doing Adsense, expect $3-5 CPM. Keep testing ad placement, colors and sizes. There's a good plugin in the marketplace to display ads at the bottom of phone screens that will help.

Rather than pay for ads from Facebook, there's a Facebook like jacking plugin, also in the Marketplace, that may work well for you.

I would talk to your host now to prepare for a mass influx of traffic and they'll get your hosting plan ready. Make sure you have good caching plugin or a CDN ready. Create light pages to load fast and reduce costs.

Don't forget SEO. If you're focusing on the Netherlands, do some keyword research to see what's popular and create postings on those topics. Viral sites are great but some story topics have a limited appeal because the content sometimes may not be search for often.

Yes, just moved it to SiteGround. The revenue is not really exploding like the traffic but I guess it needs some time. I am not sure about the ad placement, and already styled them into the colors of my site.

FB like jacker, what are the chances on being banned on FB?

For SEO, indeed, I use Google Trends and doing some keyword research to see what's hot to post about.
 
Its rare for me to suggest godaddy but very recently my site (viral football site) got a huge surge in traffic and i had to quickly switch from hostwinds because their VPS is terrible.

In the rush to switch i went with godaddys managed wordpress hosting - its fair to say they saved the day and handled my sudden surge of traffic like a boss.

Something to think about
 
Post more content and share. Focus on social media sites and you can never go wrong.

Thats pretty damn good for 3 days. I've done some autopilot Viral sites in the past and it takes a bit to get traffic flowing through social media. But they're autopilot so SEO is off the table.

I quitted with the Like Jacking, after reading some articles about FB banning and lawsuits against like jackers.
