Start Fresh - Or revive an old site?

Hey guys.

So about 6 months ago my site was #1-#3 for 10 mid competition keywords.
It was doing well.
Then google's famous updates came along and screwed it all up - I'm sure many of you can relate.
I can't even find my site in the top 100 search results - although it does still show up #1 for the main keywords of the site.

I want to get back into the same niche as it was quite profitable.
So my question now is does it make sense using the same site
or should I just start fresh?

I used a lot of spammy backlinks, and crap content the first time around.

Thoughts?

If you mean that when you search "thisismysitename.com" or "thisismysitename" it comes up as # 1-5 .... that's always going to be the case regardless of if your site has been penalized or not. Only time that stops is when you have been de-indexed. But if you can't find your keywords in the top 100, you have a penalty, and I would actually concentrate more on a new property/or properties. The penalized site site might or might not come back, betting everything on it would be a mistake.

It's okay if your site was penalized by Google - when you are sending better links, Google will recognize it and
use your site's old domain authority along with the new links to rank it higher.
 
Starting fresh site is a good option if you have time and money....

Otherwise reviving the old one is also a good option....
 
reviving old one. heard someone said google se favour older site.
 
Clone the site, canonize the site and then build some safe and varied high PR links to the new site.
 
old site google loves them and new sites take to long to build unlike an old site that has the back links that are solid.
 
Just buy domain with same in .net or .org and move all content new one and start fresh. So your articles dont get wasted
