It is needed. Why exactly I don't know
You can get a cheap one on namecheap. $7/year. I bought for the same purpose last week.

    Success

You will need an ssl certificate compulsorily. You can purchase a ssl certificate for 2$ at namecheap and a few other sites.

Else, you can you the shared ssl certificates you get on shared hostings.

Shared SSL is not recommended as it is not digitally signed by certificate authorities and will show warnings when user use them.
