SSD vs RAM upgrade on a VPS - Need help understanding it -

Hello,

So I am considering an SSD upgrade for the VPS(s), however, I am a bit of an ignorant when it comes to this subject.
As far as I've read, the SSD will permanently store the data making it a shit ton faster to run programs (correct me if I'm wrong).

So based on your knowledge, what would be better from the following:
SSD (20gb)
2GB RAM

or

HDS (70gb)
4GB RAM

Also, I would appreciate if someone with knowledge in the area could further explain a bit more how will an SDD will positively affect to a CPU.

ssd is solid state disk .. ie works like ram but non-volatile ram ..so it keeps the stuff even after you power off
and
RAM is what your programs will use
so unless you are worried about disk delay in reading and writing ( which is really a non-issue in 7200 rpm disks )
i would go with higher ram if you program needs it

are you running into a bottle neck ?

Right, I use the VPSs to run programs such as GSA, Xrummer, etc...

As I am pretty clueless and I have access to a pretty good deal, I would like to know what would be the best upgrade to take.

Currently my vps are 2GBRAM, HDD

I can either upgrade to 2GBRAM, SDD or 4GBRAM, HDD for almost the same price.

Storage is not a main issue for my campaigns, but being able to work in a faster manner is definitely what I am looking for. So knowing this, would it be better to go for the SDD or the RAM upgrade?

Ssd will make access times much faster - so programs will run faster, and potentially Internet will be faster (often with VPS Internet is limited by harddrive write speeds).

ram will effect how many programs or tasks you can run at once- so if you want to run gsa with loads of threads, more ram is better.

Mind telling me what you are paying ?
there are screaming deals on 4GB VPS right now that you get with SSD

Monitor the bottlenecks (disk i/o rate and memory) when you use the vps at max, then upgrade accordingly.
However, when a system has less memory than it needs the disk i/o data increases too, because it needs to write/read more data on the disk.

I would go for the ssd in your case anyways.

My OS is on SSD for a year now. Once you try SSD you will never get back to HDD, which is good for storage but not for the OS.

SSD takes less power, it is x2 faster but it is more expensive, if you need speed go for it, if you need more memory go for hds.

All depends on what software you use on that VPS and depends on how many VPS are on machine.

You have home PC with sata hdd, all is fast and no problems but when you buy VPS you have HDD and x-xx users on that HDD. Every user is downloading something on VPS, using seo softwares etc it equals to lower read/write hdd speed per user. In result your VPS on hdd drive can be very slow.

How to check if you need ssd on your VPS:
- no problems with downloading / uploading files, opening big txt files (speed).
- you can kill CPU with your seo software. If not hdd, ram or internet connection can me bottleneck.

I dont think ssd will affect cpu because most seo softwares are cpu/ram/internet speed sensitive -not hdd sensitive.

Sorry bro but you are wrong. Lets say you run Xrumer on $35 vps (hostamus - hdd vps). You can kill CPU with no problems using up to 10mbps of internet speed. 10mbps = 2.5MB per second. 200mbps = 50MB write per second. My old shitty sata hdd drive have 70MB write speed. HDDs in servers are faster so its nearly not possible to kill hdd using any popular seo software (if its possible your VPS provider is simply overselling - too many VPS machines per dedicated server). Additionally i think tools like Xrumer, gsa download data to ram, not to hdd so hdd write/speed dont have big influence on software speed.

P.S. If you have lags on server, software is loading very slow, big txt files are loading very slow in notepad++, it can be problem of hdd and in such case i would switch to ssd.

SSD is a solid state drive that will definitely speed up a VPS. I read a nice article from WiredTree about their upgrade of all their clients to SSD and when they were testing it before, they measured a 43% decrease in page load times on average across their VPS nodes. If you google search, you can find the report.

your I/O operations per second on a ssd are 10,000 for the low end ones for a HDD 7200 RPM you are at 150 I/O ps so almost a 1000x faster. What does that mean in real terms? I had a win 7 64 bit machine with 4gb of ram. something like a 4~5 minute boot up dropped to 30 seconds. but I get major lag when I log in remotely still so it depends on what part of the operation you are trying to speed up. if it is talking with the outside world RAM will help a little more and so will CPU speed. SSD will only make on system information retrieval faster.

If you're running GSA SER, I recommend you to use SSD seriously .. I increased my LPM using a SSD.

for GSA, SSD can't help much but you need CPU power
4GB ram is much enough

in term of speed you can choose different disk storage, in term of speed you can rank it like that's :

SATA 7KRPM < SSD cached SATA < SAS 10KRPM < SAS 15/KRPM < SSD cached SAS < SSD

Assuming all disk are entreprise grade with server hardware

HOWEVER :
Most SSD offer use cheap SSD driver and use retail hardware.
