Hey guys,

Don't you love spying on your competitors? I'm going to share a few tools I use to find good keywords that my competitors are using.

I am going to show you:
1) What keywords are your competitors ranking for?
2) What keywords have your competitors targeted recently or in the past?
3) New method to find long tail keywords, without using the keyword planner

1) What keywords are your competitors ranking for
To find out what keywords a website is ranking for I use semrush.com. Simply enter the URL of your competitor and scroll down to the "Organic keywords" tab. You will see a few keywords. Press the "Full results" link to get a few more keywords. Usually (not always) these are some of the main keywords of the website. In this test I used forbes.com and the main keyword should be forbes, but that is missing from the list. Most of the time this gives me a good idea on what keyword to target next.

2) What keywords have your competitors targeted recently or in the past?
Sometimes I am interested in which keywords my competitors are targeting at the moment. For that that I use majesticseo.com
Simply enter the URL of your competitor, go to the "New" tab, click the last pipe and you will get a list of recent keywords.

This "New" tab is also great to get more backlinks from majesticseo. The site usually only shows you 5-6 backlinks, but you can use the New tab and click the different pipes to see a lot more backlinks FREE.

3) New method to find long tail keywords, without using the keyword planner
Ok this is not new, but I haven't seen it being shared anywhere so lets get started. If you are looking for some long tail keywords, then you should use this method. Long tail keywords are great because there is less competition. Everybody is targeting the big keywords, but you can get a lot of visits targeting multiple long tail keywords with less work.

To find long tail keywords I use semrush.com again. However this time I will enter the URL of a forum. I do this because forums usually rank for a lot of long tail keywords and this way I get a few new keywords. Entering the forum url of digitalpoint gives me following results.

Now go and test this in your niche. Do it with authority sites to get big keyword ideas, do it with smaller sites to get keywords with less competition, do it with forums to get long tail keywords with almost no competition.

Very amazing piece of information. I always spent some time on spying my competitors? but all i did is just saw there backlinks report. Bow i have other good ideas to spy on them.

Great info! Haven't put enugh attention on SEMRush seems like a great tool. Going to go and have a play around with it now lol

Thanks!

You will be amazed what keywords big sites are ranking for :)

Never tried SEMrish, been using Market Samurai to spy on competitors...will try the long-tail trick on there and see if it also works. Nice tip, thanks!

I use SEMRush, SpyFu and KeywordSpy; they are very good but I am short of money right now. Any good service to spy competition which is free (looking mainly for long tails)?
