I've been noticing that google is not indexing my blogs as well. Part of this may be related to speed of the site. Seems that since the new engine came up my traffic has been dropping. I took a look in Webmaster tools and sure enough it had one of my sites running slow. It said 4.7 seconds even though that is not true, but it could be speed up.
I did have some performance issues earlier in the month with my server, but I fixed those. I'm not sure if its giving an average or what.
Anyway unless you have been living under a rock you should have seen a lot of comments out of various people at Google about how the speed of a website should affect ranking.
I thought I would start a thread where we can all share methods we have used to improve the performance of Wordpress.
Here are a couple of mine. If you have your own server, install xcache and compile apache as a DSO. This is cool.
You can also tweak your PHP.ini and mysql processes which will help.
But since everyone does not have dedicated boxes I was trying to think of things that can be done with out root access.
I combined all my stylesheets into a single file and got another 2 points in the firebug page speed plugin, Which also had the same value as what was in Webmaster tools. If you don't know about this there is now a new setting in Webmaster tools under Labs that tells you some items about your site including how fast google thinks it loads.
I also cut out all the php calls I could in my header and footer files. I just pointed them directly to the file resource or URL where I could. That got me a few more points.
I got rid of plugins that I was not using which got me some more points.
I also tried a plugin to compress css, Named Compress CSS plugin, but it messed up the text output and affected the way the blog looked so I disabled it.
Does anyone else have any ideas on how to speed things up more? Its still telling me to compress my image files which I have done, but it still does not like them.
