Looks easy but it won't be that easy, the accent will play a big role here.

I can't speak for this "voice" site but at others I was referred to in the past they would offer FREE profile where you can contact limited number of those looking for "voice" work and they try to get you to signup to recurring monthly plan with no or higher contact limits. So for this method to work one must have a really good voice that people would want to pay money for. If you don't have it you will not succeed at all. Once you create your account you can spend XX days contacting others and offering your services before anyone agrees. While this method can certainly work for very few individuals but it is not as easy as you paint it. Just because someone speaks English it doesn't mean there are people who would 100% pay them for their voices. As with any other service there will be professionals & amateurs offering same thing. With zero voice experience people will not be able to compete with experienced profiles on the site even if you lower your rates. If someone wants to hire someone to narrate a book for them they want to make sure that customers purchasing this audio book would enjoy listening to it. If they visit ACX profile of established voice actor for $60/hour and they see your new profile with zero experience for $30/hour guess which account they will pick?

I'm also not sure where you're getting $400 for 45 mins of work from. It says you have to post your desired hourly rate on your profile and audition for work to be accepted. What author in their right mind would accept your audition if your profile lists $400/45 mins? Are there absolutely nobody else offering to narrate for $20/hour? An average fiction book can be 500 pages and person can read out loud maybe 20 or less pages per hour which is 25 hours of reading. You're claiming for your method that there are authors who can afford 25 hours x $533/hour (your $400/15 translated into hourly) which translates to $13,325 for narration of entire book.

Can someone make money from this method - yes, can most peope make money from this method as exaggerated by OP - no.

Great response Combinator, and well considered. It's like saying you can "make $100,000 a year on Fiverr!". Well... maybe a select few do, but most hack it out working for chump change until/unless they get to Level 2 (if they ever do). And Fiverr takes 20 percent of the gig as well (how much does ACX take I wonder?)

You sound like you know a thing or two about this game - I'd be curious to hear your recommendations for getting VO work (I'm both talent and producer). Looking for a US female VO artist too BTW if you know anyone.

I've checked out similar site in the past and know how they work but I never pursued having listing there because I know there are seasoned professionals who are much better. My extend of using VO right now is just for my own projects. I have a method of getting FREE VO at the moment and my VA's have been cranking out many VO to add to videos that they're producing. Perhaps some day I will share my method here but for now I'll let me VA's milk it. I am currently in early stages of helping someone with new business that will be using VO work and hence trying not to mess anything up for that by revealing some things.

You can check out using https://speechelo.com/ and they have very good voices and unfortunately I cannot help you with any US females for VO work. You don't want to look for a professional since they will charge a lot compared to someone new. My suggestion is to post ad on Craiglist and ask women to record their voices and upload samples to you. One local ad can get few women to bite and respond to you and they will work for fraction of the cost of professional VO.
 
Thanks - I actually have tried CL for this, and it's been frustrating. A lot of responses are just "I can do this" with no links, samples - nada. Sad but true hah. I know about speechalo, it's good - but not great.

Not it's not at all realistic, especially for beginners with no resume. Those people have to grind it out for low pay, hoping to build up their asking price. Of course, luck can happen and someone could get a corporate gig, TV or radio VO and BOOM! But that is a very unlikely scenario in the real world.

For many, this is a really good option for earning money and developing their language.
