spam issue

This guy created 15 threads in 18 minutes. Is it possible to create a restriction that allows only one thread creation for a user (especially newbie) every 10 or 15 minutes? I'm pretty sure most of us don't need to create two or more threads in less than 15 minutes. This way we could avoid having so many spam threads.

In my opinion just block Chinese Characters. Haven't seen anything good from them

That is a bit extreme and tilted towards the fine line of becoming racist. A better way is to empower members on BHW to downvote the thread. So when a thread has negative vote, it becomes invisible to public. This way mod will have lesser workload. Look at reddit who have successfully implemented this system. You rarely see spam there.

Wasn't meant to be racist in any way. I was just thinking that there are NEVER posts with chinese characters besides this daily university spam.

Understand. Quite sick of these spam as well but I think the best way is to ignore them. By default BHW limits number of posting per min. So this should be sufficient. But the issue is that we tend to reply in those thread thus causing the thread to reappear on the top again.

IMHO, the rate at which new replies appear in other threads make it impossible for these spam threads to exist in the main page for more than a few minutes. That being said, while further tweaks do need to be implemented, it's great either way.

Why would banning a third party language in an English forum be racist, at all? So BHW bans Chinese characters. Who was benefitting from them? Even the members from China communicate in English here.

Also, reddit doesn't rely on the down-vote system entirely. It has like 25,000 volunteer moderators that take care of stuff.

There is nothiing wrong if the rules states that to post on BHW, the default language should be English. But doing so won't stop spammers as well. They can just post in English if they want. The point here is how to stop the spammers effectively without increasing the workload of Mod further. Currently Mod has to deal with so many different complaints,requests, etc.And time are very limited.Remember mods are primary volunteer and don't profit much managing BHW forum.

I think we have enough sensible members like yourself who is reputable enough and wants to make BHW a better forum.

I appreciate you understanding the problem of the mods. But bringing up racism in a place where there is no such thing was really low on your part and pretty much unneeded. Banning Chinese characters would definitely not solve the spam problem completely, but it would definitely get rid of a large section of it.

As far as the reddit like approach is concerned, the team is working on resolving these issues and big changes are coming to BHW as it is. So I guess that has already been considered.

Please refer to my comment where your concern about racist is being address. At no point in time did I accuse the post to be racist but I did mention that it was heading towards that direction if not careful. Don't jump to conclusion too fast. Getting all formal with me means nothing. I am sorry you're offended by me calling you out for bringing in racism when there had no basis. Your post clearly implied that an English community banning Chinese characters would be considered racist. This is essentially a mockery of racism.
