When I buy something, when you buy something, you're not paying money for it. You're paying with the hours of life you had to spend earning that money.
The difference is that life is one thing money can't buy.
Life only gets shorter and it is pitiful to waste one's life and freedom that way.

Ever since I started working, I measure everything I’m thinking of buying in the time it took me to make that money. I just got a washing machine, a laptop, and two pairs of jeans and I just kept thinking “This is more than half a month of work.” Obviously, these are kind of necessities — my old washing machine recently died a spectacular death, the laptop I got will help me be more productive, and I obviously need to cover the bottom half of my body — but I still felt guilty thinking about the expense in terms of the time that went into making that money. Great post, OP.
