Nothing too crazy

One of my client site had many inner pages ranking top 10 without any link building for many kws.. few days ago i linked all the website pages on the site from an existing page (think of this page like a sitemap) that had links coming to it and guess what.. a lot of ranks dropped.

Dont fuck around with internal linking too much if your ranking without any links on a page.

Just thought id share with you all.

I just don't get it, I swear?

Apologies if I was not clear.

I linked all my inner pages from a particular page that I did link building for:

To be more clear.. lets say my site is about shoes.. and the page I am referring to as the 'particular page' is the about us page.

What i did was.. I put inner pages links on the about us page... so to be more clear.. i put links of pages about blue shoes, red shoes, winter shoes, summer shoes (all these are separate products that have their own pages on the site) on the about us page.

After doing this, ranks dropped significantly.

Probably a google dance, it will come back stronger. Internal linking is good if its done the right way, if your page is about shoes you can link to other pages on the site which has articles related to shoes, its a natural thing to do.

Sounds like the issue might be multifactorial. If you built a bunch of links to this page that is now linking out to all of your others, Google's probably seeing a lot of new links coming in and is either dancing or maybe the algo wasn't a fan of your linkbuilding approach. I'm not sure that this is necessarily an indictment of interlinking itself as a strategy.

Might be too soon to judge. Linking can sometimes cause Google to re-crawl pages which causes dancing. Very hard to say.

Could be a dance because the crawlers will take time to recrawl those new added links. Or, it could be a thematic dilution. Usually, interlinking pages are for structure or silos. But certain variations like product colours/styles or even variations of "shoes"(boots/heels/sneakers/etc etc), are seen as thematic variants of the actually keywords as opposed to Semantic alternatives.
