I have a hostgator account and let my cousin use it to host his sites since i have unlimited domains. He's been using my host for a few months now.
I got an email from him telling me that my site and his site are offline. I thought the server must have been down when I go to my site i get a "site has moved" page. I go to hostgator and no sign of any server problems. So now I am starting to worry that maybe I got banned or something.
I talk to a live rep by chat and he tells me files where deleted. I thought I got hacked. Then he tells me there is somebody in another chat talking about my site trying to change the pw (it was my cousin we found out).
At that time I had not replied to my cousin's email. I don't know if he was trying to change the pw because he thought we got hacked or not.
I asked the rep if he knew if it was my cousin that deleted the files and he said it was him. But does he really have access to that? I got the impression that the rep was from another country he was very slow to respond/left the chat without even telling me. I'm guessing he found me suspicious since my cousin was also talking in another chat. I'm kinda pissed at my cousin for talking to hostgator by himself he should have let me take care of it.
So now I have to wait a day or 2 for hostgator to restore my site. Yesterday I backed-up my site using the wp backup database plugin (if not mistaken) but i don't know how to restore my site. I went to the backup wizard in cpanel, put the file in the mysql restore thingy and a new page pops up but it just says "sending request" and nothing happens.
So i'm having hostgator do it and supposedly they will waive the $15 fee since I have a backup file.
My question to you guys is how can I find out if it was my cousin or not?
I'm guessing that he made a mistake and erased my wordpress folder by mistake. The reason I say this is because my site was live like 2 hours ago and he so conveniently emails me soon after telling me it's gone (was probably messing around uploading files or something and he screwed up)
I erased all his ftps, changed cpanel pw, and will send him an email telling him to go find his own host. He's been hosting sites on my host for a long time I can't believe he would do this intentionally. He has helped me out a lot in doing website stuff I just can't believe it.
What would you guys do in this situation? Do you think it was him?
