I run a business that has nothing to do with IM, we just started out in our city and are getting a lot of great compliments on our product we offer. We've been doing this now for 3 months and its been tough but we are making a presence in our city. Today I came across our competitors website and they completely copied our style and design. Its so frustrating to work on something so hard only to have it copied...:(

Imitation is the best compliment... You just need to be sure to beat them in rankings... Just because they copy the look of your site doesn't mean that they are going to be able to beat your SEO...
 
They want to copy you, then let them. Just don't get mad. Blow them out of the water and show them how much better you are. Just don't let it get you down. Because then they win.

It happens, I made myself a sales thread a while back. Then the other day, I was just browsing around and someone copied the layout, style and fonts and even sells the same product, it's not like it's copy righted but it's a dick move there's nothing you can do about it. I guess these people just really like our ideas. :-)
 
I wouldn't worry about it too much, while people can copy, the ones that profit are the ones that innovate. If you copy you don't learn everything it took to get to the point where the originator was at when they made it. So just keep focusing on the future and you'll be fine. One thing I say all the time though is you know you are on to something when people are pirating what you do and copying your things. So who knows maybe you are on to something big.
 
I thing I used to say 3 years ago when I was in Crete for a summer holiday, to the lesbos.. the fake or imitation, isn't even as close as the real thing. Yeah, I was quite a douche when I tried too hook up with lesbos x) was just my luck to hit on them without knowing their sexual orientation..well, when a drunk man sees like 8 girls sitting on a table all with sad faces, it surely motivates you that you should go there and 'motivate' them as well.

Without any much off topic, the moral is that even if they are trying to copy you, once they started by giving birth to a clone, they won't know where is going to head, while you are the original one who has the power to succeed. Or you can just sue them.
 
i feel bad for you man. just focus on your business, improve it, and market it better than your competitor.

also, if you have a blog or email list, you can tell your customers what your competitor has done. that will have a negative impact on your competitor's reputation.

just my 2 cents :)
 
There are two ways[obviously BH]:
1. Build your Search Engine Reputation
or
2. Destroy their Search Engine Reputation
 
Blast 100 000 backlinks in one day to that site ;] It will get sandboxed in no time xD
 
Its easy to destroy a site if you follow this steps.

1) Go to your enemy's domain

2) Past the following code in your adress bar

3) Use the arrows & spacebar to overload it!

Bummer, if you can tell that the code has been copied you should be able to file a DMCA notice. Also take a look at images.

Its not the end of the world though, that means that they aren't creative and probably won't get very far anyways. Keep up the momentum and don't waste energy (aside from DMCA) on this matter. Focus that energy on getting more clients, providing a better service, and they'll be gone in no time.
