1) Btc hackers are constantly finding ways to steal your coins and best example was electrum yes the famous wallet, it gave a pop up inside the wallet asking people to update it, and bam money gone.
Lesson: irrespective of the wallet you use never update it inside it, go to their site and update it.
oh and I use electrum even today, but I was saved because I use it on mobile.
2) Stored your seed and private keys offline, like a paper or a diary . Your machines can be hacked or stolen ans make few copies of it to be safe
3) NEVER use your wallets on public wifi.
4) lastly never share it where you store your bitcoin people have lost their lives as their closed ones wanted their bitcoin, trusted people maybe your wife, family members but even then be careful about your wallet.
5) use two computers one for wallet and one for normal use
6) Keep a strong antivirus protection on.
7) change passwords on regular occasions
8) added on @GuerillaZ suggestion : to use a Linux distro for desktop hot wallets
