Does anyone use Solid State Drives? Would they last longer than a standard HD. I just ordered this one.

I built a new pc a few weeks ago and decided to stay away from SSD because of the cost. They are nice products, and they do last longer than a typical magnetic drive, but they are just too damn expensive right now.

    I decided to go with 2x WD Velocaraptors (2x 300GB @ 10K RPM), in RAID 0 config.

You will like your SSD though. I'd like to put 2 of them in a RAID 0 config and throw an OS on there, shit would load fast.

i recently bought a hp mini with solid state drive, the only problem is that as of right now they are too small, but they are awesome =) and yes they would last longer no moving parts.

SSD are safer on the paper than HDD, as they don't contain any mechanical parts. Their advertised life is quite long, but this facts has to be confirmed. If you buy anything else than Intel's X-25 or something like that, you can expect sub-optimal performance, especially in when writing (I am using SSD in my laptop). If you are really for the speed and have some money to spare for with SAS (serial attached scsi): without RAID, HDD to HDD: 150 MB/sec, HDD to somewhere else (network) 300 MB/s. Very worth of money invested. They also don't compare to SATA, as SATA is consumer technology, and as such is manufactured with less care than SAS.

now that is fast! :D love to get one but the price right now is too high. when i get a new pc
i'll look into getting one of these installed.

do these use flash-rom? if so, how many times can you store/delete data before the ssd
is useless? i know that flash-roms can only be written to, so many times before they fail.

Of course they are fast. Electrons travel way MUCH faster than those mechanical magnetic stuff found in most of our hard disks.

If I have the money, I would definitely go for SSD.

i bought a netbook six months ago with a solid state drive used it religious day in day out for research... supposed to have a long life.... bullshit... the drive died after 6 months!

took it back to bestbuy the tech there said its weird that it should fail but he was hearing a lot reports of them failing!

i love my netbook and have been without for what seems weeks now but for supposedly longer life and being more secure i dont believe it... if it fails it fails in full i dont believe you can get your data back off it unlike a conventional hard drive... i had everything backed up about from my bookmarks of which i lost a good 300 which left me gutted as they where related to future plans and project for this coming winter/spring period... my own fault i know... anyhow regardless the lesson learned backup everything if you value it!
