Socksification Redux - With Pictures!

WOW. You opened my eyes up to a world that I didn't know existed. Thanks a bunch from a total newb.

Do I have to keep changing the socks? I mean do they ever become ineffective.

Some stay up for weeks, some go down 10 minutes later. If you're only going to change your IP the one time or not for anything serious, might as well use a VPS or TOR respectively.

Great post apekillape - thanks well earnt

Could anyone please explain to me how you can use proxies with something like a php script. For example i am learning cURL and trying to set up multiple accounts with websites how can i make my script use the socks proxy?

Any help would be greatly appreciated - love this forum :)

I've been pouring over this forum all day, since I've been avoiding it for so many months and need to learn. I'm making some progress.

I have a quick question about Firewall Proxy:
What might be preventing my ability to import Socks' into my open proxies list? A screenshot of the dialog after I've chosen the document from which to import a fresh list is attached, however when I click "OK", the list remains empty.

Does anyone have an idea as to what I have done wrong?

Many thanks!

Did you click "add to list"? I forget that a lot too.

Oh hell, it' s because they're unfiltered. Clear that @Socks off the end of all of them.

Ah ok. I thought of that, but Charon was ok with it. Plus my head is a bit full after reading all of the information here.

Many thanks apekillape!

P.S. I had no idea how great this section of the forum is. Very thorough information and tutorials. Hell, even I might even get it eventually.

No prob. Some programs automatically ignore it, others can't deal with it at all. You're almost always better off just stripping it out before you do any checking or anything.

Proxyfire (not Proxyfirewall) is really good for that, even if you don't get into the umpteen other tools in it the filtering is handy as all get out.

Great! And thanks again. I appreciate the quick replies to my questions.

I'm definitely special-ed material when it comes to this subject, but I'm making some actual progress with the information here.

Eh, it's just a matter of doing it a lot. I don't understand much of anything well, I just screw up enough to have had every problem ever already.

Ok, I learned Charon and Proxy Firewall. Is there any reason that I would use Charon in addition to Proxy Firewall?

I'm pretty thrilled with PF, but then again I'm a newb with proxy stuff.

Thanks in advance.

List filtering, not only stripping the extra crap off the end but pre-removing planetlabs and other undesirable IPs before you bother starting the check.

I frankly know nothing about the Judging system on Proxyfirewall, just that it seems to work. So if you had more stringent judging needs or wanted to use a specific external judge you'd want Charon there too.

The sorting of Socks 4, 5 and 4/5 is much cleaner in Charon. You have to tell Proxyfirewall which you plan to import ahead of time, so it'll just throw out the rest.

I use Charon just to clean out duplicates and assemble lists too, just copying from the source and slapping them into the window is handy sometimes even if I'm going to later export them to a different tool for checking.

Oh ok. That makes sense. Most of my 16 hour career at this has been somewhat apoplectic, and you've just identified what details I'm overlooking.

Thanks very much again.

Nevermind. I figured it out. I am using vista & that was affecting the program somehow. I noticed that the firewall initialization was failing, so I fiddled around & tried running the program as an administrator. This seemed to fix the problem. Now the ip's are changing :)
pnewcomb,

So you got this working in Vista? I'm running Vista SP1, 32-bit, in admin mode, with most of the Visat EAC and firewall stuff turned off (now watch me get hacked for admitting that).

I'm going to try Proxyfirewall, regardless of their warnings it doesn't work, and see if I can replicate your success. Will report back.

Hi apekillape,

I think I did everything right. I only download socks proxies and let the program do its thing, selected a proxy and checked on one those "what's my ip address". It was different than my original IP so I guess it working correctly. I just want to make sure (test) that my original IP is not tied to this fake IP address. How can I test to see if it's not a transparent, public proxy, or some lame proxy?

Thanks!

I messed around with this for several hours. Got my lists, checked in Charon, loaded ProxyFirewall. DAMN - they are all slow. I am just going to use some web proxies. I don't need super secure, just trying to create a bunch of twit accounts.

Hello! Thank you very much for this info. I was wondering why it takes so long now for the browser to load pages and to upload files. When I'm using my normal IP a video file will take only 10-15 min to upload to youtube, but when I'm using a proxy using Proxy Firewall it tells me upload will take 4 hours. I'm assuming I need to use a proxy address closer to my location, but it's wierd, when I select one that's near me, and I do a 'what's-my-ip' check, it says I'm in China or Denmark, always switching up.

UG! I found an IP right next door (about 30-50 miles) and it takes so long for my browser to load pages, way too long. Is this normal?
Thanks.

I'm having the same problem with these being too slow, I'm wondering what you mean by, "I am just going to use some web proxies. I don't need super secure..."

I'm in the same boat.
