SOCKS5 or http proxy for Yahoo Mail?

Which you need really depends on your greater use-case. In general Socks are more "secure" while HTTP is more geared towards browsing.
 
I think VPN and HTTP is the way to go.

For Yahoo Mail, using an HTTP proxy would generally be more compatible and reliable compared to a SOCKS5 proxy. HTTP proxies are specifically designed for web traffic, which goes well with the requirements of Yahoo Mail.
 
Usually Private proxies from major vendors support both HTTP/HTTPs and Socks5 protocols.

So that, Using yahoo mail via web using HTTPs protocol

And Socks5 for Socket based email client.
