Looking at good options for a large community of people, the social network in a box sort've thing, and I'm just not happy with BuddyPress.

This looks like an interesting option. Kind've expensive. But I'm not much of a coder - AT ALL - so I like keeping it simple, and this has themes.

I've thought about Drupal and Joomla as well. I don't know yet. JomSocial is something else I heard about though I think that's Joomla.

Looking for good social network options.

Have a license of socialengine and it's very drag'n drop system

actually never used it in live, only on staging for testing purposes, but my expectations to make there any huge success where to small, especially if you want your own scripts/templates you have to learn the framework first.

For content sites I can recommend wordpress, for user/community-sites I recommend Joomla + JomSocial

Drupal is more for projects "from the scratch", but from my experience 6 - 7 times faster than Joomla, but needs definitely more time to master the learncurve

Thank you! I will check out Joomla and JomSocial again. I just stumbled onto phpFox and honestly thought my search was done, LOL. phpFox looks like it'll work great for me, but I remember being impressed by something I saw at JomSocial as well, so I'm glad you bumped that in my brain.

Well I tried tons of solutions. Have 3 social engine sites and also 2 phpfox sites. Also tried joomla and drupal. If you are not a coder I would not recommend Joomla or Drupal (or Wordpress) solutions. For socialnetworks either socialengine or phpfox work great. I would recommend phpfox if I had to decide between this two solutions. It has more aspects running well already out of the box. For socialengine you have more third party developers and also modules, though.
