just wondering does social signals service, really help drive traffic to a site? will i see that in google analytics?

yes you can see traffic in google analytics.
I am using social signal traffic driving sites and i can see the traffic coming from these sites.
You can try free sites like addmefast, linkcollinder, sociallikesplus and so on. However these traffic has least chance for any sales.

Social signals are as good as fake traffic, they help but not directly

Yeah, they definitely do. Personally I haven't seen much difference between real and fake signals, so I guess is difficult to track the difference.
