Does anyone have any recommendations or strategies to share? I enjoy sites like The Onion and could easily write similar content. I'm just not sure how to get traction, short of investing ad dollars into it. This would be more of a hobby than a business, so ideally I'd like strategies that are free / only cost me time.

Sites like that thrive on viralness. It's hard to do it free, but Reddit is a huge gorilla that catapults viralness, getting Facebook fan page shares etc..

If I had promot that kind of website without spending money I'll focus most on my energy on Reddit and Reddit-like websites (like voat.co).

attack it with social media, all of them, facebook, twitter, pinterest, stumbleupon, youtube, you get the idea.

Eventually you will gain traction, especially if your content is good enough.

Im doing a similar thing and all my traffic comes from social media.

The only way you'd be able to do it is if you anchored your content to current and emerging news / pop culture trends. This is probably a shit example of one current trend but Kanye West seems to be featured in the news a fair bit.

Your traffic would come from (all organic):

    - Commenting on related blogs / news sites / forums and sharing your link (there was a guide here recently published which makes use of Google alerts to find sources to comment on daily)
    - Sharing on Reddit
    - There is a method in this forum which shows you how to get your stuff ranked in Google News
    - Create a Twitter account and tweet to anyone that makes any mention of the news / pop culture topic you've written about
    - Create a Facebook account and find the more general Facebook Groups / Communities that share viral stuff and write a good comment, linking to your content. (Use the Twitter search bar...)

And above all else, make sure your website is properly optimised, responsive and is being indexed. If you've written about anything current, you may get organic search traffic for it.

    Hope this helps
