I understand that people have "followers" on twitter and "likes" on facebook, but I don't see how these tie to SEO. Are we supposed to add links on our blog sites to our social media sites or the other way around? I've only used these social media sites to increase sales or customer awareness. I'm a bit confused on how to include social media to boost my websites on google or bing.

It is just as simple as how you did it to increase your sales with social media. Just add interesting and share able contents to your website. Share the URLs for which you want to drive traffic like how you increased your sales.

You can also use a social media profile (instead of a website) to rank it. More like / followers more possibility to grab the top ranking at Google for targeted keyword. Make sure to put the "targeted keyword" into a social media profile url. e.g: www . facebook . com / chocolate and www. twitter . com / chocolate for targeted keyword chocolate. And you can add backlinks toward it if necessary. Maybe this method is not suitable for you because you want to rank your website / web page.

I will look at the link that you provided, but I have one question. If I am understanding what you are saying, adding the keyword to the facebook or twitter account will increase the google position, but that does not increase my website's position. Is that correct?

I don't think Social Media affects SEO directly in the way you are asking... However, it is one of so many ingredients which are responsible for your rankings... Google is fairly smart these days... If you are optimizing your pages, and linking back to the profiles of Facebook and Twitter, Google will pick its clues from there...
