I read about both but I dont know which among these 2 is the best?
I am also seeing this strange results, when I do social bookmarking,my site is coming up in the search results, but when I am doing directory submission,I am not seeing much results.
Can someone provide an insight on which one among these 2 should we try first?

Using a combination of both is considered best.

u need to do directory submission as well as submit your pages to social bookmarking sites, but try submitting to those bookmarking sites that are do follow. That ways - you will get backlinks which are do follow!

Website directories will give you backlinks and almost no traffic (other than dir owners visiting your site to check if it meets the submission guidelines).

Social bookmarks that are d0f0llow will give you backlinks too and are usually indexed rapidly. If your content is interesting/viral, they will also bring you some good targeted traffic.

    here, there, and everywhere!
Is it right to say that it usually takes a while before you see results if you use directory submission?

I would go for social media bookmarking, it is better because google crawls them rapidly as they are updated instantly.
For example, reddit.com is crawled by google like every 8 minutes or so.

Social bookmarking can be done for your Top level domain as well as inner pages, while directory submission applies only to the top level domain. Social bookmarks are approved automatically so the backlinks are instantaneous, whereas it may take months for your directory submission to get approved by the owners. A good approach would be to use a combination of various linkbuilding methods.

The problem is that directories try to work like a cross between search engines and sitemaps rolled into one. Their purpose is to catalog the sites submitted to them and promotetheir traffic visitors into using their system to find what they are looking for.

    The problems:

they fail to promote their own directory properly

they don't rank due to thinking " we are a directory/search engine so we have instant authority "

they overcharge and over process through their selections, trying to get the best of the best, failing to take into consideration that what they think that is, isn't what people are looking for.

they are VERY limited on inbound traffic, due to the prior reasons , as well as the fact that no one knows what they are. People don't understand that these are resources to be used. Google, yahoo and bing as search engine/directories as well but they simply market better.

So, on this side of the coin, you are looking at submitting your website for ranking and keyword position...with the exceptions of the major top directories that actually promote themselves as " search engines " and not falling to the wayside, you can depend on little to no support from the majority of them. However, still list because it is an authority backlink, no matter how low they are on the ranks themselves for the moment.

As for bookmarks, that is all about interactive people and impulsive " now " marketing. Posting there, they will find you when they need you. This is basically the offline storefront marketing method of " I'm here when you need to buy a shovel for digging that hole...we're waiting for ya. " type of thing.

This is what comes across with both, however bookmarking has a stronger word of mouth and opinionated foot hold on this type of marketing.

They both have their purpose. In my business, I get outstanding traffic from both directories, ( natural search ) and bookmarking sites, ( w.o.m. recommendations ).
