"Social bookmarking" in 2021

I've been talking to different SEO contractors and they mention building out profiles on all of these social bookmarking tools. Is this still important in 2021? Does this kind of activity still help me rank my sites on Google? I've been out of the SEO game for 8 years and I'm sure a lot has changed. But just curious if this is still "pillar" of SEO. Or is it just something that you're kind of just expected to do at this point?

I think that social bookmarking is important. Bots make use of social bookmarking for giving first priority to fresh and updated content. It also helps you to get increased traffic, rank for your site by sharing those links in two or three social sites. This is also one of the better ways.

Social bookmarking isn't useless but it isn't as effective as it was 8 years ago. You should avoid doing lots of social bookmarking fo your business site. It is perhaps fine to use these sites for second tier linking.

It's hit and miss most of the time. The issue is that whilst it's a link back to the site, social bookmarking basically needs constant engagement to keep it at the top of the interest of people.

As this is white hat SEO in most cases the best thing to do is know your audience, find their most favorite place to hang out and then try to get in front of them there. 8 years ago is when I started in SEO and back then you 'had' to be on all platforms and master them. The reality is that social signals may work but ultimately it's better to spend time on quality content for maybe 2 or 3 profiles, test, and then either choose a new selection of social platforms to focus on so that the 'signals' are concentrated and focused. IF you have 10 profiles, I guarantee 7 of them are basically never touched after set up.
