Do social bookmarking sites give you backlinks? If they do, how long do they take to show up in google?

Yes they do. Some are no-follow some are do-follow. They show up at different times as backlinks - depending on how often search engines spider the sites (even then you may not be able to see them. Sites like google don't show all your backlinks, even though they have found and counted them). You can speed the process up by pinging your social bookmarks and the RSS feed that comes with it.

less then others from link blog commenting etc even if u dont ping them
 
They do but how long it takes to show, depends on the search engine, if its Google you may not see all of them.
 
this is a very effective white-hat SEO technique that help in putting my site on the top of the searches. I must admit that all social bookmarking websites are search engine friendly sites as the content is frequently updated and the search engines love fresh and updated content :)
 
i think you are too late to tell him now if he was struggling and learning so far now he leared alot of about SEO ;)

Yes they do! I purchased a VPN for this. I created 500 accounts on top 10 Social Bookmarking sites. So that is 5000 in all. And I repeatedly bookmark my sites varying the anchor texts.
 
Bookmarking is part of Seo Off page activities, you can get quite strong back links rather than bookmarking such as Guest Posting, Blog Commenting, Web 2.0 Properties, though whitehat seo technique as per Google Guideline
 
I just noticed this is an old thread but even then posted here its no big deal i guess. This is a very effective tool used in the white hat SEO techniques. I see many more got bumped in here too ;)
 
mostly backlinks provided by blogs,forum, commenting,yahoo answer...these are the backbone of backlinks...social bookmarking is just like a supporter..but you should do bookmarking
 
Dude most people make back links from the bookmarking sites. Its obvious that they supply back links.
 
They are good to diversify more sources of your backlinks portfolio
You can also use Bookmark Daemon on demand
 
fresh example of performing social bookmarking: one day of bookmarking help bumped my traffic from 200 visits to 500+ in a day. so it definitely works!!
