Social bookmarking and backlinking

Is social bookmarking synonymous to backlinking? Or social bookmarking is a form of backlinking? Posting on blogs is a form of backlinking too right? Are there any other ways of backlinking?

The primary function of social bookmarking is to share content that may interest other internet users. From the webmaster perspective, if your website is poorly SEOptimized, you still can get lots of traffic if the content make other people want to share it.

Some bookmarks add a n-o-f-o-l-l-o-w tag so they are not very usable in link building. Others do not add this tag and will build you some backlinks.

These bookmarks are also very frequently crawled by search engines so if you want to get your site indexed quickly, bookmarking it may be a good way.
