so I have this authority site... list building question

I came up with a great giveaway to get people to opt into a mailing list for the site. Here are my questions.

Should I change the home page to be a squeeze page with the offer? Should I create a different page on the site as the squeeze page and drive traffic to that while offering the download on the sidebar? Skip the squeeze page altogether, and let people opt in from the sidebar and other offers in the context of the site?

It would not be that great for you if you are not in the same niche
