so are PBNs dead?

the past few days, there have been reports of google deindexing truly private networks. by "truly" I mean networks that are not open to the public. networks that are being used by one person only.

nobody really knows how they are doing it but the 2 most proposed ways are: 1) they scrape godaddy auctions and deindex all those domains 2) they go through cheap hosts and deindex all the sites hosted there

I will be honest with you, I have made both mistakes with my PBN. all my domains were bought at godaddy auctions, and all my domains are hosted with cheap hosting.

2 questions:
If my PBN gets found out, would just the PBN get deindexed, or would my money site also get deindexed or penalized?
is it time to stop wasting time/money on PBNs?

Exactly. Forget 'PBN' what is that.. really? Think about it..

If a dude owns 15 high quality, 'real sites' that are standalone, helpful and highly visited.. is that a PBN? well yeah, kind of, since they are his network and he owns them..

So when you say PBNs are dead, it doesn't really mean much, since a PBN can be so many things..

For you of course. Stop building/using PBN if you don't what is.
If you're building your PBN on crappy hosting and you're showing all footprints to Google please change work.

I think if they have to manually deindex pbn's its quite the opposite.

Building real websites defeats the purpose of building a PBN. If you wanted to build a 5-site PBN and then changed your mind and decided to build 5 real websites, what would you rank them with?

You could say the same about any other link building technique because they went after article directories, they went after link wheels, they went after reciprocal links and they went after guest blogging (to name but a few). BUT, these things still work to some degree, you just have to be smart and understand WHY Google has targeted each of these things and then tweak your approach so that you can continue to rank using them.

Google is definitely NOT penalizing PBNs in general, there is just no way to ethically do such a thing. They would never just scan GoDaddy auctions or sites hosted on a shared server and deindex everything, it's just not possible. With that said, many people fail to do at least one or more very important steps in setting up a PBN. The following mistakes are often made:

1) All sites are hosted on the same shared server with the same IP.

2) Sites use spammy spun content. Contrary to popular opinion, Spun content is still okay, as long as it's 60-70% unique and is not the ONLY content on your website. On my micro niche sites I auto-blog one post a day and drip the first 10-20 articles in which are all real, 100% original, written by me personally. If you are ever penalized for crap content, it wont slam your whole PBN either, it will only impact the website with crap content.

3) Too many links with unnatural anchors. Again this would only hurt one site, not the whole network.

4) Keyword stuffing, etc... Once again, it will only impact the site that's being stuffed, not the entire network.

With that said, if you are making the same mistakes on all your sites, it's only a matter of time before they run into issues. Just be smart about it and you'll never have any issues. I have just over 50 sites in my PBN. All of my domains I found through FreshDrop, pr2-. I have a few different hosting accounts and I don't have more than 3-4 sites on an IP. If you have 100 sites, you don't need 100 IPs, 25 will do just fine. Just remember to maintain content quality and anchor naturalization, you aren't going to have any problems.

Not dead. Make sure your who is information is diverse, as well as your hosting, website themes, and domain registrars. I have bought 3 expired domains from godaddy. One was deindexed, I believe this was because it only had wordpresss installed on it with no articles or content. my 2 others are indexed, one is complete, and the other has not been started. Still indexed doe.

There are several footprints to look out for, despite being in use by a single person. So, simply claiming your network to be the real one may not be enough as there might be a giveaway.

I've noticed that sites/keywords using some of the "bought" PBN links have seen a sharp decline over the past 5 days. I believe this is either a deindexation or penelty these PBNs have had.

Bottom line... beware low quality PBN links from here on out.

The PBN (PRIVATE Blog Network) is still working for 2014 as SEO purpose on Google.
