Strolling along the web, I came across something interesting.

    Full article: http://www.skytopia.com/project/articles/sleep.html

An interesting point of view, isn't it?

From my experience, it's all a matter of routine. At times I've slept for like 8 hours/night for months, then we have those busy months where you are working on a brand new project and 4 hours + a short nap in the afternoon does the job. I'd say it's more of a habit.

Fight sleep?? What? Is there a War on Sleep now?

And you put drugs and smoking in the same basket as a physical need, a human can die if you deny him of sleeping you know.

Sleep is a necessity, just like food and water. That 'conversation' you posted above is completely ridiculous. If it's 2 am and your tired, get some sleep.

Some people feel that bragging about how little sleep they get somehow makes them 'hard' and a better SEO'er/IM'er. TBH if things are going well you should be able to sleep a good 6-7-8 hours, feel refreshed and not be constantly working.

    Pretty useless conversation.

Sleep is a must for anyone to survive.

The problem with Addiction isn't that you need it. The problem addiction leads to death or in best circumstances Cancer.

Have you ever heard of someone died from sleeping !! Looks like the one wrote this was high :D

You don't need to take this topic to a whole new level, but what is well known by each of you, is that the more you sleep (hours) the more your body will feel like it needs that certain amount of sleep in order to feel ok. If you sleep for 12 hours a day for a period of several weeks only, you'll notice that a 4 hour sleep would be a living hell for you.

Not that anybody would care, but I sleep around 5-7-8 hours, depends on what I did on my previous day. One thing I know for sure: if you aren't rested, your productivity will be very low.. like what you would do in 3 hours of work prior to a night well rested, can be the same thing that you could do in 12 hours prior to a night of little to none sleep.

OP's story has a point. If you feel tired, the bed isn't always the solution, your body enters in a senile state, no matter what age. Maybe people should think about working out on their energy levels, like doing a sport, going to gym, eating at least 3 times a day, maybe even getting some natural supplements for energy like bee pollen.. and so on.

Don't see any relevance here: sleep and drugs.

Good long sleep prolongs your life. Your metabolism slows down. And when you are lying in the bed in horiszontal state and slightly awake after just wakeup, you are getting all the inovational eurika ideas. All inventive thought come to your mind. Because you get good flow of blood to your brain.

That's why all ancient greek and roman philosophers had this beds, not chairs, for all their mind work, food consumption and leisure.

There's plenty of study about sleep. Sleep is a physical necessity, nobody knows why, it's a mistery and only theories exist. Some say the brain needs to rebuild indexes. Some say it's simply recharging.... But to this day nobody knows precisely why we and every Earthly animal sleeps....

Fun fact: up until the invention of electricity, we used to sleep in 2 cycles, from 6 PM to around midnight, wake up, throw parties, have sex, then sleep again till morning. The 2 cycles are still in our DNA, so if you feel sleepy at around 5 or 6 PM then feel a sudden clarity at around midnight and feel like dominating Google at 2 AM, you're just experiencing your sleep ancestry.

Personally I dunno how people survive on just 5/6 hours of sleep. Can do it for a few days, but feel knackered afterwards.

    Sleep is for the weak!

lol :) You need to get your sleep otherwise you will die.
But you can live perfectly normal with ~6 hours a day.

You are mixing two very different concepts. One: basal metabolic rate. The other: the necessity of sleep.

The first is fully understood and you can learn all there is about metablism. The latter is not, nobody knows why we sleep or how it works exactly. Fact is every single animal on Earth needs to sleep which is a very curious thing in itself. Animals sleep any time, not just at night.

You can slowly raise your metabolic rate, day by day, until your body is "working out" even when you're seated. Yes, "burning fat while seated" exists....but it requirest work and marathon-level training.

For the curious see a book called Ultrametabolism. Since I read it, I started understanding a ton more about metabolic rates. But rest assured it has zero to do with sleep. in fact, it's quite the contrary of what you said, good sleep helps speed up your metabolic increase.

Also: high metabolic rate is good for burning fat, but it's not necessarily good for your health forever, you're making your machine work more. We have a limited amount of heartbeats in this life, use them wisely.

I first read it as the kid wants to sleep and his mom is denying him sleep.

That is just retarded to keep going without rest, if you haven't got unfinished tasks then I don't see why you should fight sleep.

It's time for that kid to move to a mental hospital or something, he's way overthinking things.
