Hi, as the title suggests, I was slapped by Google early in 2012. I had a few sites, but 2 mainly that brought in a modest £200-£300 a month with not much effort put in on my part. Then one night (and this could be coincidence) I made a couple of changes to the site - mainly reducing a couple of image sizes, and next morning my main site dropped from position 5 to not in top 300 for all keywords. Then all my other sites followed. I suspect I was systematically f'd up by the Panda. I gave it a couple of weeks but there was no change in position so I made some changes, but nothing happened. After a couple of months I decided to sulk about it and lost all interest for around a year.

All of my sites were mainly affiliate sites. The content wasn't amazing but it was alright. They ranked on page 1 of google for main keywords for at least 2 years before the fall from grace. I had built links to them through mainly articles, guest posts, comments, forums and some squidoo pages. Nothing dodgy on or off site.

I have written off those sites and although advice on what happened is welcome it isn't what I am after. Here is my question:

I have now made another site as I spotted a few nice low competition keywords, with good earning potential. I obviously want it to start earning me some cash. My onsite SEO is fine (I think) but I need to do some off site work. I don't want to muck it up and ruin my chances of a page 1 ranking. What are the most important off site things I can do in 2013 that wont upset the mighty google? I honestly feel scared to start building links at the moment. I have spent 3 weeks developing the site and I don't want to have wasted my time.

So far all I have done is created a fb page and a twitter page. I was tempted to buy 1500 fb likes but don't want to do anything that appears dodgy in the eyes of Big G.

    Any advice much appreciated.

Sorry to hear about your slap...I heard google updates are going to happen more often from now on as well.
