I've made this post on a similar forum, so I'm reposting it here to see if I can get any more ideas:

I swear I've never had so many issues with sites jumping around as these. I consider myself fairly knowledgeable at SEO but this one has me stumped.

The situation:

I have 2 sites, both targeting different keywords, both on different hosting (not that it matters). Both are in the same niche, but targeting completely different keyphrases.

Both sites have 100% original unique content. I add an article about 1 per week (sometimes more, sometimes less). Both wordpress blogs.

They are both about 8 months old.

My problem: they will not stop jumping. They are not doing the typical Google dance for 2-3 weeks and then settling down. When they are ranked, they are both #1 or #2 for their respective keyphrases. They rank for about 2-3 days, then go off to page 10-20 for 4-5 days, come back for 2-3 days, go, come back, go come back. What's weird is they both seem to be ranked at the same time, and leave at the same time, even though they are targeting different keyphrases and are on different hosts.

They have been doing this since DAY 1. 8 months later, still doing it.

I'm doing the standard backlinking - article marketing, blog commenting, profiles, manually finding authority sites, etc. I build backlinks very slowly and very steadily to them.

I'm seriously about ready to give up on them, they are taking up most of my time trying to figure it out.

I guess my question is has anyone else had something similar happen to them? If so how did you resolve the situation? I've had sites dance before, many sites - and this behavior is completely abnormal.

I'm seriously about ready to give someone $1000 in cash to figure this out. Maybe I should have labeled my post that to get more views.

Thanks for any feedback/help in advance.

Ever think about doing more aggressive linkbuilding?
If it fails or even harm your sites (if link building can really harm a site) you are ready to give it up afterall. Maybe worth a try?

Do some proper linkbuilding to it, and you'll help Google determine which spot you deserve.

Linkbuilding is something that I've done the entire time.

I update the site at least once a week, offpage seo (backlink) to my inner pages, inner pages linking to homepage, etc etc. I even have a couple pr3-5 EDU backlinks going to the homepage.

Can you explain / expound what you mean by proper link building?

Im having a similar problem now my site is on page 1 and in a matter of minutes jumps to the top then to the bottom then to the middle then again to the top it's like a roller coster (not fun...)

in the same boat with a site i've built for the past 6 months. It'll come back to the first page then just drop off for a month then come back for a day to a week then drop off. Lets see if we can figure this out, Are you using google analytics?

Infact this is happening more in this month for my sites. It was ok till jan but after that i am seeing a lot of serp movements on my site..

March so far has been a shitter for me. My sites are all first page usually, maybe not top, but first page at least. Although right now market samurai is telling me literally none of them are, so i go to google myself to check via proxy, and some are still first page, some have gone completely.

I have no idea what's wrong with it right now, but it's been bouncing around or giving false data to market samurai for at least the past week.

Hm.. I'm so interested to figure out what's happening too. Are you building links at consistent rate?

I have this problem to, on 10 of the new sites ive made, they are position 10 one week then drop to 96 the next and so on, just keep building quality links and they will soon start sticking!

Same think happens to me in last 3 months.
Each keyword, different rank on each check.
