Sitemaps, are they worth doing?

Are sitemaps a good or a bad thing...?

Im just finishing building my search engine website and want to know should I write a sitemap...?

I know nothing about them. Are they written in xml and what do they do...?

Any examples..?

It's good to have sitemap and yaa they are worth effort... Just get a program which will automatically create it, no need to write down every thing from scratch... If you are using platform like wordpress then you may find plugins which can do it for free...
 
Im using dreamweaver, most written in , html, css with some php and javascript once its completed.

I think the sitemap is written in xml right...?
 
Yes, you definitely want to create a sitemap and very simple. Google sitemap generator and it will create it for you and then submit to your webmaster tools.
 
Google "sitemap generator". Install it on your website, and setup a cron job to run it every night.

I think the sitemap makes a difference only when a site is dynamic in nature and the session IDs were screwing up googlebot, otherwise it seems to be of little help.
 
A sitemap is useful for large website, new sites, sites with rich media content, or websites with poor internal linking since this can help search engine crawlers find pages that it would not normally find while crawling your website. Your sitemap can also provide metadata that is useful for properly indexing your content (videos, images, articles, etcetera). So yes, creating a sitemap is a good idea.

Good catch! I didn't even bother checking the date of this post (even though I really should have since lot of new members here have been bumping old threads lately). All well, I suppose my post could still help someone. :D
 
It is good to have site map on the website. It helps the crawler to visit max webpages of the website. The sitemap should be in xml format.
 
i just consider sitemap as a free of cost do-follow links without any effort...
 
Yes sitemap are very necessary for a website, If your website has a very complex structure then you must have a site map on it. Sitemap is a structured list of pages of a website acessible to the spider it tells the search engine about all the pages in the site. You can either use google "sitemap generator" or xml-sitemaps to create a Site Map .
 
If you are using wordpress then it is definatelly worth 3 minutes to invest into installing sitemaps. I use Yoast SEO plugin that have sitemaps included
 
Sitemaps are definitely worth it as it is really easy to setup. It helps google crawl your site better and idnex your site at a quicker rate.
 
I have always used one, it makes it easier for crawlers to find every page on your site.
