Siteground = Absolute Shit

I am seriously shocked that this host was one that I found recommended on BHW. I can only assume that these "reviews" were made by newcomers to building sites, certainly networks. I have just ended a nightmarish experience with these idiots and I want to issue a warning: this company is about nothing but constantly phishing for upgrades. They will nickel and dime you to death over absolute nonsense.

Bear in mind, I have been doing this for a long time (check my post history if you like, I've been regular on this forum and several others for many, many years). I amo no newb when it comes to webhosting and I've used a lot of them. Siteground serves no other purpose than to constantly ask you to upgrade your service and it is so, so transparent. Upload a series of images? Time to upgrade! Sudden surge in traffic? Let's upgrade. Yeah. How about you fuck off?

Seriously, I'm warning you - especially if you have any intentions of utilizing them to create a WordPress Multisite Network or, hell, for all I know, it's probably the same with a tiny mom & pop blog - they will do everything they can to suck every possible dime out of you. Meanwhile, there are several other hosts that will provide the same, space, same service, same uptime, for LESS. As an aside, if you're going to launch a large Multisite Network, use AWS or a similar service and scale it accordingly.

With Siteground, it's constant, non-stop requests to add more space (when not needed), "oops! You're over your limit on inodes!" - seriously? What hosts are barking about inodes anymore? Do they even know what a inode is? Certainly most of their customers do not and they're counting on that.

Just stay away. I wanted to issue a word of caution.

EDIT: Corrected "Linodes" to "inodes", having been correctly made fun of by Sugirl. The point stands - but wanted to fix it so not to confuse any future readers of this thread.

I made the exact same experience. They call it "unlimited websites" but there was a limit of inodes. Once it exceeded the limit the websites wouldn't work anymore. Funny part about this: They had several addons in the cPanel, which generated countless files by itself for cache or other useless purposes. So they would generate useless files on my account and then tell me: "Oh, you almost reach the limit, please update your hosting plan". Such a joke

Siteground was one best hosting i ever use but don't know what's going on from last 2 years.

Awww...shit (re: Inodes) - you know what I meant. I must have had Linode on my mind because I mentioned AWS. And, also you know what i mean about "reviews". And, finally, amen on your last point.

Not really surprised by your complaints at all if you have a small or simple site they are okay to good normally but if you experience traffic increase big enough then they turn into a nightmare very fast such as in the past I was kind of like forced to pay by them at the time like $250 per month to keep site run from VPS of like $30 before that part of why I never used them again.

This is EXACTLY what happened to us. We'd clean up only to find that, in less than 24 hours, we were at capacity again. It's a total scam.

Yes, I was cleaning it up manually as well and the inodes reduced by a half....after a few days inodes were up to the limit again.

It's easier to switch yes but I had no time since I just bought a house while Siteground became stupid .

Same. And believe me, I'm kicking myself. As soon as I began to see those "time to upgrade" notices come in for no solid reason, I knew that I'd been taken. But, unfortunately, everything was built at that point (the infastructure anyway)....We just completed the process of moving it all. Nightmare.

for me siteground was excelent before they implemented their site tools instead of cPanel...

Why not just get Linode Droplet? I bet it will be even cheaper than your siteground shit..

I'm hosting 7 different websites that in total get 400k uniques month on the $5/month Linode plan
+ It will be much faster than your siteground shared as well...

The best is to never go for unlimited space host. Since there is no such thing as unlimited space.

I can understand they did seem to start with amazing support wise but once traffic goes up at all they become a nightmare so fast.

A big reason for why so many people used to promote them all the time they had a very popular Affiliate system for why nothing negative used to appear about them in the past but over the last few years, I noticed more and more people complaining about them all the time more less.

Sounds good once you leave them fully your problems should be gone fast.

That's a fair question. This particular project started as a "small" one (as they all do). As it started to become profitable, we scaled and since this was a multi-site, it was just easier to keep things where they were. At first, we had implemented an auto-posting plug-in and we thought that this was causing the space issue. So, we removed the plug-in and replaced it with something a bit more robust and it definitely solved what we THOUGHT was the issue (we had assumed that WP was creating multiple image files for every post because of the theme we were using) - so...we kept building.

This is a streaming based site, so we do use Linode to host our streaming server. The funny thing is, I actually brought up on a call "Hey, why don't we just put everything on Linode...it might just be easier that way." - but let's just say one of the people involved had read good things about SG. Ultimately, it's my fault. I should have known better and said no. You live and you learn. But, man, I hope nobody else has to go through this.

Oh - and we just moved everything to Linode. lol.

Not to mention that their renewal fee is ridiculously overpriced. I ditched them and went with cloudways.
