I'm not talking about a strict silo where you change the content of the menu based on the article you are reading. This is probably more about site structure and topical relevancy more than anything.

Say you have a site that covers ball sports. So site structure/main silos would be football, rugby, cricket etc. Taking football as the example, you then have 4 options. The same applies to rugby and cricket too.

Options

A. Football is the main silo and all articles relating to football remain here. Your main kws/articles are best football boots, best footballs, best goalkeeper gloves etc. You may decide to sprinkle in some informational articles too. Everything you write about football, regardless of sub-topic, is in mysite.com/football

B. You're focused on buying intent only. Football is the main silo but then you have sub-silos of Boots, Balls, Gloves etc. Best football boots goes in mysite.com/football/boots, best footballs goes in mysite.com/football/balls etc. No informational content is added.

C. Same as B but you also add informational content in sub-silos like mysite.com/football/training, mysite.com/football/formations

D. Football is the main silo and your sub-silos are Equipment (where you cover all the Best X kws), and more informational content like Formations make up a sub-silo, Training makes up another etc. No plan to go as deep as mysite.com/football/equipment/boots, as it sounds a bit excessive.

Advantages of Each

A. Very simple

B. Allows for great topical topical relevancy and you're focused on buying intent only. But issue becomes that you can cover the potential sub-silos in one lengthy article, including all the LSI kws in the article too. Not entirely sure this structure is practical if you don't add more articles. Sounds like it could be overkill. Sure, you can add informational content, like The History of Football Boots, Football Boots Your Favourite Players Use etc, but I'm not sure it would be worth it because search volume would be low as well as buyer's intent.

C. Allows for even further topical relevancy.

D. Thinking this might be the best way. What kind of complicates matters and confuses me is that I've seen many sites dominating by just targeting Best X kws and little to no informational content. Does adding informational content purely for the sake of topical relevancy and not much else become worth it? It doesn't actually seem like it is.

This doesn't necessarily have to apply to something as broad as all ball sports. I would have the same question if my site covered just Pressure Washers.

One of the main silos could be Buying Guides. You could decide to expand Buying Guides into sub-silos like Gas Washers, Electric Washers, Accessories, or just add all articles to the main silo of Buying Guides.

So the question becomes which structure would be best? At what point does it not become worth it to separate into sub-silos and write additional content?
