Hi guys

Have a site that ranks top 3 for a good keyword but the client contacted me about a redesign of the site. What would happen if i totally redesign it? What should i avoid changing and what should i keep at all costs? All advice is appreciated.

Thanks

You can change everything from pages that isn't ranking except the keywords you are trying to rank it for (Or you still can, depends upon its competition and if you can still go for it to rank those keywords).

About pages that have a good keyword ranking, i suggest you maintain almost every seo aspect, the keywords, the article (Keyword density, internal and external linking structure, etc. etc., it'll all comes along with the content/article), metas and just move content placement, add some cool new graphics and/or html5 features.

Just like your client had said, "Redesign", "Design wise" graphics, images, etc. et.c and not content wise "if" you don't know what you are doing i suggest this is the safe zone.

Hope this help.

When one of our clients goes for a redesign we normally try to convince them to keep the content in tact as much as possible. We have never really lost any ranking due to a redesign, but I think the key has always been keeping the urls fully in tact, and keeping the content.

As long as you do not change the URL structure or drastically how content is displayed you should be fine.

You should probably expect some fluctuations in the beginning though once the redesign is initially completed.
