I have a website in the situation described in the title.

What can I do here to fix this? I don't have control over many of the links built to these pages because they have gone viral a few times, but I take 2 positions on page 1 of Google. I want to only rank one and repurpose the other page for another keyword.

That shouldn't be a problem/ However, you do run the risk of loosing some of the juice that its going to that page if what you are going to create there is now relevant to what has already been there.

The links linking to it are some what relevant I would assume? So if as long as you can do it in a way that it still is then you should be fine. But if you try to change it completely then those link have now become non relevant.

It may have enough juice to still rank, but maybe not as well as it would have with what was there before.

My situation is weird, because it's the homepage and the page that corresponds to a specific topic that are ranking, and the homepage really has nothing to do with that topic or keyword. I don't really know how to fix that.
