Site not showing up in SERPS (Top 100)

Hi all,

So one of my amazon affiliate sites is not showing up in the top 100 of the serps at all.

I first put the site up in mid april and put a couple of basic articles on it and left it for a few months due to other projects. Over the last 2-3 weeks or so I have totally improved the site, it now has 3x 6000 word articles and I have on page optimised.

The site indexed no problem at all, it has no penalties either.

Any ideas what is going on here?

Keyword WAY more difficult than you thought?

Long content =/= good content

Did you delete the old articles, or just build them up?

Keyword has 8100 searches per month and 8 million results in the serps - only 23,500 when used with "intitle". Keyword revealer difficulty score of 21 percent.

Content is good, it may not be exceptional but definitely good enough to rank in top 100 at the very least.

Buggered up how so?

Just built them up and improved upon them.

I have launch jacking sites which are 1 page sites churn and burn that still rank on page 2 for their keywords. Although these are ultra ultra low competition. Could it be the competition?

8,100 Monthly Searches generally isn't v.low competition for you to rank well without link building.

Are you doing any link building? If not - you need to.

So you think competition is not low enough to rank in top 100 with just content and on page optimisation?

I think that's irrelevant. You won't rank top 10, or more importantly top 3 (where the money is at) for a 8,100 monthly search keyword unless you've found a golden one with no competition. Ranking 55 won't get you any traffic.

I wasnt expecting to rank top 3 without any backlinks.

So are you saying ranking top 3 for a 8100 monthly search keyword is not worth trying or just saying that its not possible without backlinks?

In 99.99% cases it's not possible only by building a site. You should start link building + social signals and so forth.


What I'm saying is that it's not relevant if you rank top 100 without SEO or not, at least for me - I never look at that.

Yeh i think I just didnt explain myself. I was just thinking that I should have at least ranked top 100 with just content. Anyways ill start building backlinks.

This is the most competitive keyword ive targeted. How hard have you found it to rank keywords of this amount of searches?

It honestly varies from KW to KW - it's a pretty vague question. I've seen KWs with 8k searches that are really easy, and some that are extremely difficult.

Thanks alot man. Just one last question if I may.

When doing keyword research what rough numbers do you look for in terms of monthly searches and number of results in the SERPS?

Is it posible to rank a keyword of difficulty score 15+ @ position #1 - #10 with just good content and on-page seo? If no, what range of difficulty is it possible with?.

I don't look at monthly searches at all to judge how competitive a term is.

I look at the competition: The DA/PA, what type of site it is, what kind of backlinks it has, whether it's targeting the keywords directly, and so forth.

Whether you want to target it would be completely up to you and what kind of power can you bring to the table along with how much potential the keyword has.
You have keywords that have 300 monthly searches but bring in $xx,xxx in monthly sales, while you also have keywords with 300 that bring in $0 in sales.


I know its not a direct answer but there is no direct/correct answer. Just like if you go vacationing in Thailand, you can literally live off of $5/day while at the same time you can spend $5,000/day - huge gap just like when it comes to SEO & competition for each keyword is unique. It's on a keyword to keyword basis.



Also one important note: KWFinder's x/100 difficulty measurement tool is NOT a 100% accurate. I've been approached with keywords that are EXTREMELY competitive yet have a difficulty of 10/100 on KWFinder. From what I've seen, "difficulty" measurements are most accurate by Traffic Travis. But you should not really look at that imho. Go in depth and analyze the competition. SEO is complex for a software to give you accurate measurements of how difficulty it is.
