Hi All,
My site was hit in Dec 2020 update and I have been trying to recover since. I have tried many things but none have worked out. Looks like all page on my site got a 10 position penalty - nothing ranks above 10.

At this point, I am considering moving the content to a new domain and 301 the old site to the new site.

The new site will be an expired domain from auctions.

Looking for ideas and suggestions on the best way to 301'ing the site. Anyone have experience with

1) Moving exact content to new expired domain - does it rank or is marked duplicate by Google
2) Does this kind of setup last long? or just a matter of getting hit in next update

Thanks
Nitin

Best practice : create exact duplicates and set canonicals. when all the pages are indexed then do a 301.

what makes you think you got penalized?

Be careful on 301, if you really did get penalized if it were due to bad links (which I doubt), you might carry the negative effect by doing the 301.

My site took a dip in the Dec update. Went from 900 visitors per day to near zero within 15 days. All pages that were ranking between 1-5 positions, now rank between 10-15. Tried many things but can't get them to move past 10 anymore.

Hi Nitinsy,

Site migrations are tricky, as it needs excellent coordination.
The best way is to run a small test on a sub-directory or a subdomain.

If doing are doing so, make sure that the new site is faster, cleaner, and more generally SEO friendly than the old one.
Set up tracking prior to migrating a website

Here is what you need to do!

  • Apply the 301 redirects dependent on your mapping archive.
  • Update all of the rel=canonical tags on your sites so that they point to the new URLs.
  • Update all of the internal links on your sites with the goal that they highlight the new URLs
  • Reach out to anyone still linking to the old URL (at least the people with influence), and ask them nicely to update their links.
  • Update your XML Sitemap, and submit it to Google Search Console and Bing’s Webmaster Tools.
Hope this will help you out
